W 1908 roku w krakowskiej pracowni Wojciech Kossak zaczął malować portret Zofii z Lewentalów, żony Ferdynanda Hoesicka – literata i wydawcy. Historia jednego z najgłośniejszych i najdłuższych romansów artysty jest punktem wyjścia opowieści intrygującej i pełnej namiętności, snutej na tle niespokojnego czasu przełomu wieków. Stary świat się kończył. Jedni popełniali samobójstwa, inni szukali nowych podniet. Na scenie pojawiają się zamiłowani w historii Kossakowie, rodzina Lewentalów – zasymilowanych Żydów, i spolonizowani Niemcy – Hoesickowie. W tle zaś Sienkiewicz, Zapolska, Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, Dagny Przybyszewska, Reymont, Wyspiański, Axentowicz. Poznajemy ich od strony, której nam w szkole nie odsłaniano. Słabostki i małości bohaterów nie odbierają im znaczenia, jakie odegrali w naszej historii.
