Summary

Stories tell of great fire-breathing beasts large as castles, fierce and deadly, capable of magicks that no human can match. The Kingdom of Kentaine once allied itself with the dragons of old, but eventually, the dragons were lost to time and fell into legend.

Sir Gawain, First Knight of the Realm, is tasked by his older sister the Queen to travel to the edges of their kingdom, where a beast is flaming villagers and has the locals ready to form a mob and hunt it down themselves. His mission is to find the dragon, stop the violence, and do what he needs to maintain the peace.

His journey puts him in the heart of a confrontation with the dragon, but instead of saving the villagers, it is the dragon that needs rescuing. Zephyr, a fire dragon and an escaped slave, needs protection, time to heal, and a chance at a life full of hope.

Gawain can do no less than offer his sword, his shield, and his heart. Evil is hunting Zephyr, and it will not stop until it has reclaimed its prize.

Beyond the legends lies the truth, and love, like fire, consumes everything it touches.

Contains mature themes.

A sweet short story

It is a sweet short story. There is very little world building but enough to hook readers and provide a satisfying peek into the intricacies of the story's setting. The romance was quick but expected from such a short book.

🎧 I chose this book because Joel Leslie was narrating, and it kept me engaged during my chores. As always, Joel narrated masterfully.

The beginning of a great relationship

I love dragons and this book introduces a dragon you cannot help but fall in love with. Having escaped a cruel mage, who stole his magic, and kept him chained and starved, he is found by his knight who wants to save the broken injured dragon.

Enjoyable

The book was good. Narration was also good. Loved Zephyr. He was the star of the book, in my opinion. On a side note, it would be nice to leave just a rating when not in the mood to write a review.

Horny born yesterday

The author was in a hurry to write down the sexual fantasy she'd envisioned. She did make sure to include talks about consent (god forbid anybody got offended by less than perfect characters). Unfortunately, she forgot to write a plot.

The dragon trusts the new person too quickly and eagerly, despite a lifetime of abuse. He is perfect at sensing good and evil too, even though he'd grown up in captivity,
The knight has no hesitation either, even when the dragon, aka the large fire-breathing creature, shows sudden possessiveness towards him. It's almost like he knows the author's plans so he has nothing to worry about...
The smut is awkward, even with all the talk about consent. In a matter of days, the traumatized born yesterday youth becomes fully aware of his sexuality and feelings (because his mom gave him a sex ed lecture and he watched some videos, apparently). Seriously, if you want to write hot dragon smut, why not simply write a mature character? This virgin captive energy is too much of a female fantasy.

We get a comment about "xenophobia" towards dragons too. The dilemma about intelligent but highly dangerous creatures coexisting with humans would be more interesting than the worn-out xenophobia trope.
We get many lines about everyone's smells and the handsomeness of the knight, but nearly no real tension, action or stakes. The ignorant peasants and evil humans vs. the born yesterday dragon who just aches to be ridden by the hot knight is all we get.

Even the story of the dragon's escape is told in a dialogue. It could have been shown through action, giving us an opportunity to really get connected with the character's plight. But there isn't any story to speak of, just a window dressing for the self-insert smut.
