About this listen

In this exciting tale, the legend of Amy Robsart and her secret marriage to the earl of Leicester comes alive in a blend of historical fact and fanciful fiction.

Particularly interesting is the character of Queen Elizabeth I, whose inner thoughts explore the difficulty of balancing royal duties with human emotions.

The plot takes a long time to unravel, with some irrelevant sections describing court pageant which become a bit tedious. A good classic Scottish yarn, but I was disappointed to find the narrator was an American who read the swashbuckling passages as though they were part of a Western movie and did the ladies with a chipmunk whine better suited to Beatrix Potter. The narration was peppered with mispronunciations of English place names - ‘Mawlbowrow’ for Marlborough, and for ‘he was the duke of Medina coming over incognito’ we got ‘he was the dook of Medaeina coming over incoagnito’ with heavy stress on ‘coag’.
Why couldn’t they respect the Scottish author and the era of this novel and find a native Scottish reader?
