About this listen

Including an exclusive bonus conversation between the narrator and the author, Dr Natalie Cawley.

'I loved this witty, insightful journey into the world of psychotherapy' –
Raynor Winn, bestselling author of The Salt Path

At the psychologist's clinic of an NHS hospital, Noah needs help with procrastination, Bill compulsively lies, Steph is coping with rejection and their therapist, Dr Natalie Cawley, is dealing with her own emotional crisis, breathing into a paper bag between patient sessions.

In this honest, often poignant and frequently funny memoir about training to be a psychotherapist, we meet the patients grappling with mental health issues. From OCD and addiction to self-deception and toxic relationships, Dr Natalie helps them understand and change these attempts to self-soothe.

Full of lightbulb moments, Just About Coping is a journey into our inner worlds, where the drama of our break-ups, breakdowns and breakthroughs takes place. In times of stress and suffering, Dr Natalie reveals, we are all just about coping. None of us is immune – not even your therapist.

Critic reviews

I absolutely loved this. Like an Adam Kay for psychotherapy, Dr Natalie Cawley opens up the closed world of therapy so well, with humour, honesty and fascinating insights. (Frankie Boyle)
Cawley treats phobias, PTSD and porn addiction - while battling her own demons. . . [She] writes engagingly about the darker aspects of life . . . The disclosures are as diverse as they are diverting.

I was hooked from the first page. It's a fantastic memoir both brilliantly written and expertly read. The book strikes the perfect balance between personal accounts and psychological theory. I've even picked up some practical coping strategies along the way.

Engaging from start to finish!

This book presents some helpful psychological concepts, but the personal anecdotes often feel too neatly aligned with the themes—almost as if the author retrofits their life experiences to match the concepts being explained. It comes across as disingenuous at times, lacking humour or authenticity. As someone who works in mental health, I found the stories inflated and unrealistic, which undermines the otherwise informative content.

Informative but lacks authenticity

Really enjoyed this. How can reading Natalie’s words evoke so many emotions. Hope she follows it up with a second book. Thanks Natalie and well done on such a great book.

Great stories, as a trainer counsellor. I found the book was almost like a text book
