Critic reviews

"It’s funny, it’s daft-yet-relatable, it’s still a nerve-jangly thriller and it moves at a cracking pace. In fact, if you’re stuck in a bit of a reading rut, it’s just the palate cleanser you need.” (Emerald Street)

"This one is even better than the one before. Buy!” (John Lenahan, best-selling author, magician and voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf)

Great humour

I loved the mix of social misfit characters. I was hooked on page one, although not what I would usually go for I enjoyed every minute. I seem to have inadvertently started with book 2 so will immediately buy books 1 and 3. I hope the author is busy writing more so I always have another to look forward to. Loved the narration, too. Great job!

More please!

I am so smitten with these books. Lovely story, fabulous narration. Genuinely funny and utterly charming.
Delighted to see the author is writing a 3rd book. Just wish he'd get a wiggle on. If Finlay doesn't narrate that one too ... well, I will sulk.

Super writing

I found it a bit difficult to get into the first book, almost as if I was joining a group conversation halfway through. But once I got with the flow, I quickly became a fan of Christopher Shevlin's writing and the excellent narration. I've listened to all three books in the series and I'm looking forward to number four.

Funny sweet and engaging

The second in the series and all the characters are still well observed and the story is fun and surprising. Such a refreshing book and beautifully narrated. Definitely worth a listen

Funny, clever and brilliant

Loved the book. Even better than the first book. Brilliant characters and great twists and turns. Can't wait for the next one but not sure there is one yet. It made me laugh out loud and cheered me up every chapter. Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it.

Brilliant!

This is a joy and perhaps even better than the first Jonathan Fairfax book, which is also a joy. Hopefully the third one will be an audio book soon. They are beautifully read. If you would like a pick-me-up read and enjoy a bit of a caper then I highly recommend.

Long-winded, tries too hard to be funny and dated

Any sense of pace, action, intrigue or jeopardy in this book is swamped in the long-winded, tired and repetitive interactions of character stereotypes that Shevlin, presumably, thought were hilarious. There's um-ah Jonathon, of course, his flash, overly-attractive mate, an insane American bad guy, a man who can only speak in business cliches, a dour hard-as-nails northerner, a bunch of sub-human IT guys; a man with a speech impediment even make an appearance (I nearly gave up at that point). The actual story can barely make itself heard, which is probably just as well because it's flimsy at best. I listened to the end, but it was a real struggle. There's a weird 3 hours or so in the middle to do with homelessness which adds almost nothing to the story and is borderline offensive.
