Summary
When Jo Brand hosted Have I Got News For You late last year, her calm explanation of the effects of sexism on women to a bemused all-male cast turned into a viral phenomenon.
There has been a whole tradition of books over hundreds of years where a father shares his wisdom with his son - started by Lord Chesterfield in the 18th century - while women have been silent (aka bullied into thinking their advice wasn't worth writing down). This book puts a stop to all that.
Ranging from your family and how to survive it to what no one tells you about the female body; from how not to fall in love to heckling as a life skill, Born Lippy gathers together the things Jo's learnt about the world, the things she wishes she'd known and the things she hopes for the future into a hilarious and highly useful guide to life that everyone female (and male) needs to hear immediately.
Packed with memorable anecdotes from her life and career, coloured by her experiences as a psychiatric nurse and working mother of two, this book will not only entertain but also really help people.

An excellent slice of wisdom from Jo Brand
I love Jo Brand's stand up, and her general nonchalant attitude, and now I love her feminism. She spoke honestly, openly and humorously about the way the world has changed for women - both for better and for worse - during her lifetime through her own personal experience. Her advise was clear and open, and her experience as a mental health nurse shone through. Loved it.

Highly recommended
I love Jo Brand's openness about all things female. I wish I had this book when I was in my twenties and trying to work out who I was and what I wanted. This book is funny and thought provoking and highly recommended to all women out there (and men might learn a thing of two as well)!

It's Jo Brand
For some reason I was expecting this to be more autobiographical than it was, so it wasn't really what I was expecting it to be, but it's Jo Brand and I love her, so I did really enjoy it anyway! And of course, it's always good when the author narrates their own audiobook too.

I love Jo brands no nonsense way of thinking, her outlook on life and the way she doesn't give a stuff about the 'norm' we should all aspire to be more like this!

Loved it! great company and great advice.
I really enjoyed listening to this and found myself responding out loud to various observations. I will be sharing this with my daughter, granddaughter, and every woman I know. If I had a son or grandson this would be compulsory listening for them too as this would certainly help them to understand what they can do to make the world a safer and more equal place for us all. Well done Jo, and thank you.

A surprisingly emotional experience
As a comedy fan, I expected this book to be a comedic retelling of Jo Brand's life, with her trademark acerbic tones and amusing anecdotes. Instead, I found incredibly useful and heartfelt advices for how to navigate the modern world, especially as a woman. How to stand up for yourself, how to react to verbal abuse, to flashers, to bullies, etc. There was even a section on what to do when you are bullied and you freeze up in terror, unable to say or do anything. As self-help books for women go, this book is so much more useful and practical than just "lean in". It helps the woman in a toxic relationship, the woman who got abused for how she looks, the woman who got flashed on the train, the woman dealing with a dead-end career and the woman preparing for a job interview. The advices are sobering, sometimes very grim and depressing, but they all come from a life well-lived. If I had daughters, I will pass these advices to them.
