Summary

J. P. Morgan is more than just the name on one of the largest banks in America. He was a man who altered the course of American finance and the chief financier for the strategic interests of the titans of the day, such as Carnegie and Rockefeller. He also financed new and ingenious technologies developed by Thomas Edison and was a visionary who saw the potential in Nikola Tesla.

His ability was not limited to Wall Street, though, and his reputation was not bound by the shores of America. He touched core industries in his lifetime, from shipping to power to steel and provided the spark that reignited the economic soul of America after the Crash of 1907.

He had a personal side, too. Broken by the death of the love of his life, his once spritely demeanor changed, and he found solace in his work. The more he was befallen with sadness, the harder he worked, never once succumbing to the pressures of a world that was changing right around him.

J. P. Morgan built the financial world we live in today and did it with the might of his mind and the crux of his cane. The mold from which he came has long since been broken, and there is no other man, titan, or genius who has come close to the contributions he made for his industry and his country.

Hear all about him and find areas that you may have in common with this towering titan.

Somewhat confusing at the end

Very interesting listen of the evolution of banking in the US and UK , but I suffered in the post-war era as the author tried to keep track of too many different companies and people. Presciently observed the rise of riskier and riskier behavior as regulation in the US/UK changed or relaxed.

Good ensight

Good insight of history of jpm, but felt it came of a bit like reading articles rather than a story

Great way to learn the history

This is a very easy to listen book that by following the history of Morgan provides an accessible way to understand the history of US finance by focusing on the history of the various banks and there key leaders. The human stories behind the bank are well told and surprisingly interesting.

Very valuable, not enjoyable

I must admire J. R. MacGregor resolve to research his subjects so thoroughly. This was my second go-around after Titan. These books have tremendous value as insight into the times and thoughts of the world's first Corporate Titans. However, both books, but this one in particular is tremendously difficult to listen . I find myself labouring through each chapter, midway through and not enjoying the experience. I look back and have learned a great deal, but it was an incredible pain to get there.

The good parts are great

The book is fascinating and has aged well . The parts that cover the 19th century through about world war II are fascinating and unmissable. The latter parts towards the end of the book, seem to be written out of necessity because the book had to cover the whole history of the bank. I believe a later more experience J. R. MacGregor would have had the wisdom to stop earlier and make a more compact book.

Global Economics

This book proffers insights into the political and economics of the Western hemisphere and serves as a prequel to the global banking avalanche of 2008. Banking economics is a necessary element of our global stability and growth; however greedy banking economics is as destructive as any war in our history. MacGregor does an outstanding job as writer, historian, and economic expert. This book is a preliminary look at a great historian. Anything MacGregor writes is must listening regardless of the subject. This particular book should be mandatory listening in Business or Economics 101 at every university.

Terrific Business History

Great overview of the various Morgan entities and personalities. Would love it offer did an update as this history is a very insightful precursor to the banking practices and challenges of the 21st century.

Outstanding

Outstanding. While some might not find the material overly interesting, the author potrays it in such a way that you feel as though your listening a novel.
