José María Blanco White (1775-1841)

José María Blanco y Crespo, llamado Blanco White, nació en Sevilla el 11 de julio de 1775, hijo de Guillermo Blanco, vicecónsul inglés en Sevilla durante el reinado de Fernando VI. 

Estudió la carrera eclesiástica. Tras una crisis espiritual marchó a Madrid. Luchó contra los franceses durante la ocupación. Su ideología liberal le llevó a exiliarse en Inglaterra. Allí fue profesor de Universidad de Oxford. 

Escribió numerosos trabajos de crítica literaria tanto en inglés como español. 

“Una vida dedicada a combatir la intolerancia” reza una placa en su casa natal de Sevilla. Una vida que disfrutó en Inglaterra porque España no estaba preparada aún para aceptar sus ideas. Enervó a la Iglesia y criticó sin tapujos el retraso de su país. Si se hubiera quedado “le hubieran ejecutado”. Se fue y pasó a formar parte de la historia de la literatura inglesa. En España apenas se reconoce su figura. 

Murió en Liverpool el 20 de mayo de 1841.
