Story
Living with a reactive dog can accidently create a reactive person and a cycle of negative experiences begin. There is an answer though! With understanding comes positive change. It might not have always been this way; perhaps walking once triggered positive emotion. Maybe we were happy until something specific happened; for example, we met someone with an unfriendly dog that attacked ours or made them really scared. We, too, could have felt scared, then that fear grew over the next few walks, until we felt it the moment we saw another dog in the distance.

Story
Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Dogs are one of the most popular companion animals, and many of them go through life confident and happy with the world around them. A significant number do not - the scared dogs, the anxious dogs, the ones that are terrified when approached by another dog, person, or a whole range of possible things. These dogs react to the causes of their fear in a range of ways, all of which combine to make what are called "reactive dogs", the ones that cannot cope and have to find a way to tell us.

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.
