Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Story
For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

No matter how cushy their lives, dogs live on our terms. They compromise their freedom and instinctual pleasure, as well as their innate strategies for coping with stress and anxiety, in exchange for the love, comfort, and care they get from us. But it is possible to let dogs be dogs without wreaking havoc on our lives, as biologist Marc Bekoff and bioethicist Jessica Pierce show in this fascinating book. They begin by illuminating the true nature of dogs and helping us "walk in their paws".

Story
Living with a reactive dog can accidently create a reactive person and a cycle of negative experiences begin. There is an answer though! With understanding comes positive change. It might not have always been this way; perhaps walking once triggered positive emotion. Maybe we were happy until something specific happened; for example, we met someone with an unfriendly dog that attacked ours or made them really scared. We, too, could have felt scared, then that fear grew over the next few walks, until we felt it the moment we saw another dog in the distance.

A fascinating and balanced portrayal of the dog
Very enjoyable. Great science based listen for anyone even remotely interested in dogs. The science is portrayed in a highly accessible way, the writing is interesting, and all is enhanced by the narrator's performance. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the author doesn't just present and focus on the dry scientific facts, but also allows for the emotional consideration of the human-dog bond. I think it's a very good, balanced book.

A must for dog owners
What did you like most about Inside of a Dog?
This is an extremely interesting audio book. Really well narrated. It was surprisingly engaging and informative and promised to get me looking at my dogs differently. It succeeded in this. The book is intentionally quite amusing in places.
Any additional comments?
Any dog owner would benefit from this. It will help you get some understanding of why your dog behaves the way it does and give you some idea about how to influence it. It is not a training guide though

great book, bad narrator.
I have tead the book before. So I decided to get a copy on tape too. I don't think I'll be able to listen to much of it, the narrator is terrible. Sounds like an electronic voice on the old school text to speech functions on Mac computers. Not enjoyable to listen too at all.

Too much comparisons between dogs and wolves
Some good parts but the fact that dogs are not wolves made a lot of this book unbearable to listen to and made it difficult to distinguish whether or not the rest of the information in the book was based on fallacies too.

This book didn't have much to offer. I expected to learn more about dog psychology but little in it was really all that new. the book read more like a memorial to the author's dog than anything of major importance. also the narrator sounded like siri, which made the experience worse.

Never used five words when two hundred would do
I'm sure there's good information buried here. I might actually like the print version where I could skip the author's rambling, personal side notes and disclaimers. I felt like I was listening to a warning label on medication. To be honest, I never made it past chapter two. By then I had learned that the author had lost a dog because it had gotten out in traffic. Yep that was it and I don't mean I had learned nothing new. That one line sums up the first two chapters. With a good editor, it might become a very good ninty minute book, I'll never know.

Encyclopedia quality
This book was very poorly marketed on Audible when they described it as being anything other than a scientific manual. I am a lifelong dog lover/owner and consider it almost a sin to leave a book unfinished but I cannot make my way through this one. It is written - and narrated - like an article in a scientific journal, which may be factual and informative to someone interested in that level of detail but in my opinion the occasional bits of info about her dog do not lighten or entertain enough to balance out the rest.
It is written in extremely formal style (I’ve heard no contractions, for example) and the narrator annunciates each and every consonant quite crisply with a pause between each word such that it sounds almost robotic. A paragraph may begin with a description of an “anthropomorphism” (this word gets used more than ‘dog’ I think) and then we hear on and on many examples of why and how this may be a mistake and then perhaps a comment or two about “the dog”. In the midst of one of these we were suddenly going on and on about how the tick looks at life. Now I know that ticks are born without sex organs but that is not what I bought this book to learn.
