Summary

Modern slavery is happening all around you...and you can be part of the solution.

Human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries. Nor is it something that just happens to "other people", such as runaways or the disenfranchised. Even kids in your own neighborhood can fall victim. But they don't have to.

Through true stories and expertise from her many years of boots-on-the-ground experience, anti-trafficking expert Nita Belles teaches you everything you need to know about human trafficking in the United States - helping you identify risk factors, take practical steps to keep your loved ones and neighbors safe from predators, and recognize trafficking around you so that you can help fight it.

Excellent, Informative, Heartbreaking, Powerful.

Would you listen to In Our Backyard again? Why?

I would definitely listen to this book again because it was so valuable and educational regarding the horrific realities of modern day slavery; human trafficking.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In Our Backyard?

I would have to say the anecdotes that recounted the trials and horrors that various people have gone through being enslaved and human trafficking.

Which character – as performed by Nicol Zanzarella – was your favorite?

That is a difficult one to answer. I think it would have to be the narrator as a whole, not really a specific character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A devastating glimpse into the horrifying reality of modern day slavery.

Any additional comments?

I would highly recommend this book to anybody interested in 1. learning more about this terrifying reality 2. getting involved in its abolishment.

Great job to the author. She is one of my heroes.

Awakening

I knew about human trafficking but I didn’t know how it worked , the things that supports it and what I can do to stop it as well as to prevent my loved ones from every getting in to that life. Full of tragic stories that has moved me to action and I hope it does the same for you.

Good Message, But...

the stories turn into speeded up cartoons of good little Christian girls who pay the price for one disobedience to their parents (horrors like buying a low cut shirt mom and dad forbad) by ending up turning heroin tricks in back alleys. Even if these are true tales, they are so poorly told they seem made up.

A must have for all parents.

The information and stories provided in this book is something that should be discussed with loved ones. I'll be talking to my girls about what to look for and how to better protect themselves.

learned a lot

the book started to get quite repetitive. the author did not go into graphic details on the stories presented. I think the devil in those details could have made an impact.

Informative book

There was a lot of repeating of thoughts, ideas, information in the book. But the content of actual information was good.

INFORMATIVE

I really enjoyed ready this book. I feel better informed about human trafficking issues after reading it and am further motivated to do whatever I can to help bring awareness and make use of my money and votes in a way that will impact the end of this human atrocity. I want to help. I'm continuing to research, I've found a friend with the same passion and we are going to educate ourselves and others and together do whatever we can. I would love to be contacted by the author for direction on how to proceed for the most impact. But I will reach out if I don't hear from her. I would also like a list of statistics from the book. They were informative and I'd like to have them memorized so that I can effectively communicate to others the magnitude of this horror.

Great content. Mildly irritating voice.

Really enjoyed this book however the reader spoke every single sentence with an upward inflection making her sound like computer or Siri. It was mildly irritating but I found the content of the book to be very valuable!

A good entry to learning about HT

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes if they have little understanding about human trafficking. It is a good introductory book on the subject since it covers not just sex trafficking issues, but also labor trafficking issues.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I am a resources adviser for an anti-human trafficking organization, so this is not a surprising story for me. I have listened to/read a hundred books on the subject. Every single one is pretty sad. :(

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

They did fine.

Could you see In Our Backyard being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really. It is informative, but I don't really think this one would make for a good movie or TV series.
