With his tumultuous love life, relentless pursuit of a male heir, and drastic religious transformation, England's King Henry VIII's life sounds more like reality television than history. He was a man of fascinating contradictions. What could have caused his incredible paradoxes? Could there be a simple medical explanation for the king's descent into tyranny? Where do the answers lie? Blood will tell.

Story
The Tudor monarchs were constantly surrounded by an army of attendants, courtiers and ministers. Even in their most private moments, they were accompanied by a servant specifically appointed for the task. A groom of the stool would stand patiently by as Henry VIII performed his daily purges, and when Elizabeth I retired for the evening, one of her female servants would sleep at the end of her bed. These attendants knew the truth behind the glamorous exterior.

Henry's relationships with the men who surrounded him reveal much about his beliefs, behaviour and character. They show him to be capable of fierce but seldom abiding loyalty, of raising men only to destroy them later. He loved to be attended and entertained by boisterous young men who shared his passion for sport, but at other times he was more diverted by men of intellect, culture and wit.

Story
For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. The Royal Art of Poison is a hugely entertaining work of popular history that traces the use of poison as a political - and cosmetic - tool in the royal courts of Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the Kremlin today.

Story
Mary Boleyn was the mistress of two kings, Francois I of France and Henry VIII of England, and sister to Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife. In this astonishing and riveting biography, Alison Weir’s extensive research gives a new and detailed portrayal, in which she recounts that, contrary to popular belief, Mary was entirely undeserving of her posthumous notoriety as a great whore.

Story
Antonia Fraser deals with each woman in turn with sympathy - the sympathy they deserve for having had the unenviable fate of being Henry's wife. Inevitably, there was great rivalry between them; there was jealousy too: the desperate jealousy of queens who found themselves abandoned, but also the sexual jealousy of the king who discovered himself betrayed. The story Antonia Fraser tells is romantic and cruel, funny and sad, dramatic and enthralling. This is historical biography at its best.

Story
Alison Weir was already one of Britain's most popular historians when she wrote her first novel, Innocent Traitor, which hit the Sunday Times bestseller list to a chorus of praise. Now, in her second novel, Alison Weir goes to the heart of Tudor England at its most dangerous and faction-riven in telling the story of Elizabeth I before she became queen. The towering capricious figure of Henry VIII dominates her childhood, but others play powerful roles.

Story
January 28, 1547. It is almost midnight, and the cream of English nobility hold their breath as King Henry VIII prepares to face his God. As the royal physicians wring their hands and Archbishop Cranmer gallops through the frigid night, two dispossessed princesses pray for their father's soul, and a boy, soon to be king, snivels into his velvet sleeve. Time slows, and dread settles around the royal bed, the candles dip, and something stirs in the darkness...something, or someone, has come to tell the king it is time to pay his dues.

Story
The lives of Henry VIII's queens make for dramatic stories, and Alison Weir writes a series of novels that offer insights into the real lives of the six wives based on extensive research and new theories. In all the romancing, has anyone regarded the evidence that Anne Boleyn did not love Henry VIII? Or that Prince Arthur, Katherine of Aragon's first husband, who is said to have loved her, in fact cared so little for her that he willed his personal effects to his sister?

Summary
Illegitimate children, adulterous queens, impotent kings, and a whole dynasty resting on their shoulders. Sex and childbirth were quite literally a matter of life or death for the Tudors.

let down by poor reading
Where does In Bed with the Tudors rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The book is interesting and enjoyable, but the reader frequently mispronounces words, confuses words and generally appears to have a poor understanding of what she is reading. This is a pity as it is a good book.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Debra Burton?
Anyone capable of getting the words right.

Tudors?
I'm sorry to say but I had to stop listening to this book. The narrator, I felt, was not too good. There were mispronounced words, slow pronunciation of words. This can't all be placed at the door of the narrator, some must be placed with the editor. I regret not being able to complete the book as the Tudor era is one of my favourite periods.

Ruined by poor narration
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Grating voice - emphasis and delivery sound like a particularly bad am-dram actress - many words mispronounced - Difficult to listen to.
Any additional comments?
Such a shame that a well-written and potentially interesting book should have been reduced to this.

In bed, meaning giving birth
The title is a little deceiving, the story is arranged around the Tudor women's pregnancies and childbirth experiences. I thought it was full of many new tidbits about a time and a monarchy that too much may have been written about. I enjoyed the book, surprisingly. The narration isn't great, but I have certainly heard worse.

DECENT HISTORICAL ACCOUNT - AWFUL NARRATOR !
What did you like best about In Bed with the Tudors? What did you like least?
This is pure fact, much of it overlooked in other history books,. However this is the worst narrator ever, especially for a book that is entirely narrative with little or no dialogue.
Would you recommend In Bed with the Tudors to your friends? Why or why not?
Not at all! Amy Licence totally ruins this book. She reads way too fast, fumbles words, and mispronounces even more. Her voice is shrill, irritating, and lispy. The book had not been rated at all when I bought it but I figured how bad could a story about the Tudors be? Answer: VERY BAD AS NARRATED BY AMY LICENCE!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She's just not experienced enough. A more dynamic narrator like Nadia May, Wanda McCaddon or Simon Vance could have made this a 5-star read.
Do you think In Bed with the Tudors needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, it could start with one on the Plantegenets as a prequel. The sex lives of the the rich and Royal is well told in the original book.
Any additional comments?
I could only take a few hours of this book due to the exceedingly bad narrator. Also the recording production is full of reverb which only exacerbates the narrator's poor performance. With another narrator, this could be a really good work. As it is now, it's not worth the credit.
