I am a huge fan of Ms Ross’s DCI Ryan series so I pre-ordered this new book, the first in a completely new series and couldn’t wait to listen. I was not disappointed.

Instead of Northumberland this book is set in County Mayo, Ireland and the countryside and the community of people living there are brilliantly portrayed. The story itself is a well written, gripping whodunit, with plenty of likely suspects and I didn’t guess who the killer was. However I did guess the final twist in the epilogue fairly early in the book, though it didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Doctor Alexander Gregory is a great character and I look forward to getting to know him better in future books. I also loved the fact that our old friend Ryan got a couple of mentions!

The narration by Hugh Dancy was amazing. Bring on the next in the series!

Another fantastic series by L J Ross

Keeps you guessing. I didn’t guess the perpetrator. I realised what the underlying storyline would finally uncover. Dr Alex was an interesting character and I’d like to know more about.

A good read/listen

I enjoyed this journey off piste and had no idea ' who dun it' until all was was revealed. Away from DI Ryan the new book shows how the author has improved her writing style over the time she has been producing murder mysteries.
I'm not sure if it is possible to continue using this Dr Gregory character in other books however. He is a bit boring although his ability to profile is great.
Would I read another? Well probably, just to see if Ms Ross has proved me wrong.
Now, when is the next trip to Northumberland due...?

A change from Northumberland.
