I am at a loss to understand the glowing reviews!
I was optimistic about this, given the fantastic reviews, but what a let down! I guessed the perpetrator early on and was about to return the book. However, before sending it back, I re-read some reviews. When I read about twists, turns, red herrings, etc. I thought that I must be mistaken and so kept listening. But no, I was right all along and should have followed my instincts and not wasted any more time and money on this nonsense. On the plus side, the narrator was good, but not only was the murderer pretty obvious, the motive, when it was revealed, was unconvincing. I was also really put out by a couple of particularly silly points. The first is when Alex wonders about Niall and Connor's absent father. His conclusion: That the mayor either never married or was divorced, is both ridiculous, (an unmarried mother/divorcee as a respectable politician in a tiny Irish Catholic community???) and overly complicated! The most obvious explanation is that he's dead! The second is the constant references to the mayor believing that one or both of her sons killed the family dog when they were children. No parent in his/her right mind would have let that slide without investigation and it certainly wouldn't be the 'go to' conclusion in most households following the death of a pet! It was a lazy plot device which aimed to create suspense. Furthermore, Alex's nightmares, together with his determination to remain single for no apparent reason, are clearly supposed to set up the 'twist' at the end, but just make him seem unreliable and disturbed. He is clearly in the wrong job, as shown by the major lapse in his judgement which is revealed at the end. This is the first LJ Ross novel I have downloaded and I think it will be the last.

Another fantastic series by L J Ross
I am a huge fan of Ms Ross’s DCI Ryan series so I pre-ordered this new book, the first in a completely new series and couldn’t wait to listen. I was not disappointed. Instead of Northumberland this book is set in County Mayo, Ireland and the countryside and the community of people living there are brilliantly portrayed. The story itself is a well written, gripping whodunit, with plenty of likely suspects and I didn’t guess who the killer was. However I did guess the final twist in the epilogue fairly early in the book, though it didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Doctor Alexander Gregory is a great character and I look forward to getting to know him better in future books. I also loved the fact that our old friend Ryan got a couple of mentions! The narration by Hugh Dancy was amazing. Bring on the next in the series!

narrator was reading the wrong book
This book is apparently set in Mayo in the republic of Ireland. We were treated to northern Irish accents the whole way through. That's like doing Scottish instead of Welsh. The name Colm is pronounced like column, not coalm. The story idea is good but characters are mostly one dimensional.

Great beginning to a new series
I am a major LJ Ross fan and I just love DCI Ryan and his team. This new series introduces the psychologist Alex Gregory. The locale of County Mayo, Ireland is a departure from Ross’s previous books and it works well. Alex is invited over to help profile a killer in a small town. There are many suspects, several alibis, and a bunch of red herrings. It took quite a while for me to figure out who the killer was. In fact, it came as a big surprise. That’s a good book, in my opinion. And the epilogue made me exclaim out loud. The narration was first rate. Very well done. I am looking forward to more in this series, as long as Ryan comes back, too.

Another Storytelling Triumph from LJ Ross
I’ve read everything LJ Ross has written. Her stories and style are compelling reads for me. However, now that I’ve just completed reading Impostor, I have to add riveting to the adjectives I associate with Louise’s books.(For me, riveting is a degree beyond compelling.) This story is intense and vivid in imagery. As with the DCI Ryan series, she’s done another exemplary level of research, but of more significance for me, Louise has again translated her research into this story in a way that moves the story at a pace with only one negative outcome—I can’t put it down and it’s ending too soon, which now it has. This book is unlike her DCI Ryan stories, an amazing feat, because the Ryan catalog is, on its own, so worth reading. And yet, one of the benefits of Ross’s Alex Gregory series is that it differs significantly in style from Ryan. Nothing lighthearted about Gregory, which has led me to add riveting to my Ross lexicon. Thank you LJ Louise Ross. Looking forward to new releases in December.

Enthralling tale, set on the West coast of Ireland
English criminal profiler finds himself in a small, close-knit Irish community. This is an enthralling tale revealing how much a good psychologist can analyse people’s behaviour and motives when there are no clues as to who is the murderer.

Wonderful new series..
Wow! Another great book by LJ Ross. And I didn’t come close to guessing who the killer was. I will definitely read the next one, when it comes out. I liked Alex and was always wondering about his nightmares, but I did have a feeling about Kathy. And I was right about that part of the story. This had some great secondary characters. I've listened to all 13 books LJ wrote in the The DCI Ryan Mysteries so it's nice to have another series starting. No sex and no swearing. As to the narration: Hugh Dancy did a great job on the narration. I would listen to him again.

Didn’t guess the murderer...
But I guessed the “secret” early on! Still, it looks like a very good beginning for this new series. As a big fan of the DCI Logan series,I was skeptical that I would want to find out more about a character that didn’t necessarily loom large during his appearance in those novels. Yet, i was pleasantly surprised that he (Dr. Gregory) came with a fair amount of “demons” of his own that needs to be worked through, examined or just acknowledged. He is no Ryan, and there are no warm, good hearted and familial supportive cast to help Alexander Gregory ( at least not yet ) but he hold his own well, if just a bit shakily. I am definitely looking forward to the next in this series and I do highly recommend it if you are a fan of LJ Ross.

very satisfying
very well constructed and performed perfectly. Eben if one has suspicions of the killer's identity rom the start, it is sufficiently twisted to keep one's interest until the end.

Wasn’t Expecting It
I wasn’t expecting this book to be so good or that I’d like it as much as I did. I’ve read one or two LJ Ross mysteries, but they I don’t remember much about them. I’ll definitely search out more after reading “Imposter”!
