Summary
From the International number one best-selling author of the DCI Ryan Mysteries.
A Best Audiobook- Fiction Finalist at the New York Festivals Radio Awards .
Impostor, is the first instalment in Ross's brand new Dr Alex Gregory series, narrated by actor Hugh Dancy.
After an elite criminal profiling unit is shut down amid a storm of scandal and mismanagement, only one person emerges unscathed. Forensic psychiatrist, Doctor Alexander Gregory, has a reputation for being able to step inside the darkest minds to uncover whatever secrets lie hidden there and, soon enough, he finds himself drawn into the murky world of murder investigation. In the beautiful hills of County Mayo, Ireland, a killer is on the loose. Panic has a stranglehold on its rural community, and the Garda are running out of time. Gregory has sworn to follow a quiet life but, when the call comes, can he refuse to help their desperate search for justice?
Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set amidst the spectacular Irish landscape.

I am at a loss to understand the glowing reviews!
I was optimistic about this, given the fantastic reviews, but what a let down! I guessed the perpetrator early on and was about to return the book. However, before sending it back, I re-read some reviews. When I read about twists, turns, red herrings, etc. I thought that I must be mistaken and so kept listening. But no, I was right all along and should have followed my instincts and not wasted any more time and money on this nonsense.
On the plus side, the narrator was good, but not only was the murderer pretty obvious, the motive, when it was revealed, was unconvincing. I was also really put out by a couple of particularly silly points. The first is when Alex wonders about Niall and Connor's absent father. His conclusion: That the mayor either never married or was divorced, is both ridiculous, (an unmarried mother/divorcee as a respectable politician in a tiny Irish Catholic community???) and overly complicated! The most obvious explanation is that he's dead! The second is the reference to the mayor believing that one or both of her sons killed the family dog when they were children. No parent in his/her right mind would have let that slide without investigation and it certainly wouldn't be the 'go to' conclusion in most households following the death of a pet! It was a lazy plot device which aimed to create suspense.
Furthermore, Alex's nightmares, together with his determination to remain single for no apparent reason, are clearly supposed to set up the 'twist' at the end, but just make him seem unreliable and disturbed. He is clearly in the wrong job, as shown by the major lapse in his judgement which is revealed at the end.
This is the first LJ Ross novel I have downloaded and I think it will be the last.

Another fantastic series by L J Ross
I am a huge fan of Ms Ross’s DCI Ryan series so I pre-ordered this new book, the first in a completely new series and couldn’t wait to listen. I was not disappointed.
Instead of Northumberland this book is set in County Mayo, Ireland and the countryside and the community of people living there are brilliantly portrayed. The story itself is a well written, gripping whodunit, with plenty of likely suspects and I didn’t guess who the killer was. However I did guess the final twist in the epilogue fairly early in the book, though it didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Doctor Alexander Gregory is a great character and I look forward to getting to know him better in future books. I also loved the fact that our old friend Ryan got a couple of mentions!
The narration by Hugh Dancy was amazing. Bring on the next in the series!

narrator was reading the wrong book
This book is apparently set in Mayo in the republic of Ireland. We were treated to northern Irish accents the whole way through. That's like doing Scottish instead of Welsh. The name Colm is pronounced like column, not coalm.
The story idea is good but characters are mostly one dimensional.

A good read/listen
Keeps you guessing. I didn’t guess the perpetrator. I realised what the underlying storyline would finally uncover. Dr Alex was an interesting character and I’d like to know more about him.

Good start to a new series
I love LJ Ross books but was starting to tire of the endless drooling between Anna and Ryan so good to see an interesting link to one of the intermittent characters in the Ryan books and a new direction in the series. Was far too short though look forward to a longer story next time !
