Il mondo perduto (The Lost World), fu scritto nel 1912, ed è una delle opere più note del filone avventuroso del mondo perduto che si sviluppò a cavallo tra il XIX e il XX secolo. In particolare influenzò tutte le opere che in seguito parlarono di dinosauri, a partire da King Kong e a finire con Jurassic Park. In questo romanzo viene introdotto un personaggio, il professor Challenger, che, come dice il none, è quasi all’opposto di Holmes, istintivo quanto quest’ultimo è riflessivo. Questo personaggio sarà poi il protagonista di una serie di romanzi di avventura. Cona Doyle fu ispirato, nella scelta dello scenario del romanzo, dalla conquista della cime del più alto dei tepui venezuelani, il tepui Roraima. Questo luogo, grazie alla sua inaccessibilità, ha conservato specie animali e vegetali assenti nel resto del mondo, ed è stato infatti utilizzato come scenario nei film di Michael Crichton. La colonna sonora di questo film è stata utilizzata come cornice musicale.
