Summary

A strikingly sincere portrait of a town and its buried secrets from an outstanding new voice in southern fiction.

In a North Carolina mountain town filled with moonshine and rotten husbands, Sadie Blue is only the latest girl to face a dead-end future at the mercy of a dangerous drunk. She's been married to Roy Tupkin for 15 days, and she knows now that she should have listened to the folks who said he was trouble. But when a stranger sweeps in and knocks the world off-kilter for everyone in town, Sadie begins to think there might be more to life than being Roy's wife.

As stark and magnificent as Appalachia itself, If the Creek Don't Rise is a bold and beautifully layered debut about a dusty, desperate town finding the inner strength it needs to outrun its demons. The folks of Baines Creek will take you deep into the mountains with heart, honesty, and homegrown grit.

The story never fully evolved

The performances were great but as each character is performed your expecting this great mystery or climax. Then it ends with no true mystery or plot. Not the worst book I’ve ever read but with such detail in the character building one one expected way more storyline. It’s as though the author became tired so just said I’ll end it here. Not the worst but very far from the best.

Multiple character narrative.

This was a first person narrative by multiple characters (at least 8) that didn't follow much of an overall story line, but instead gave a telling of life in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains. It was quite dreary most of the way through but had interesting characters that kept me going.

Fantastic narration

I liked the story line, but really loved the spoken word. Each persons personality came through so clear with the inflection and drawl of their voice. From Sadie to Billy to Kate to Birdy....all wonderfully performed!

Didn't care at all for this book

Sorry to those who might have liked this book but I found it intolerable, so much so that 5 hours into it I am returning it. When it first started I thought it was going to be a good book but the longer I went on the less I liked it. Most of the characters are so one sided and hateful that it just wasn't enjoyable.

Hard times of life in the past

Revealing picture of life in Appalachia. Each voice had its own personality and dialect. Hopefully conditions in this part of NC have improved and life is not as hard as portrayed. Disturbing at times and I would have liked to see a happy ending for Kate the most fascinating character of all. Loved the different dialects for each character, but it was confusing to follow all the different characters at times. Hope to see more of them in future books. There are lots of stories to tell of this part of the country.

Disappointing

This is a book that doesn’t know what story it wants to tell. It was a collection of character profiles with a thread that tried to keep it together but the thread broke and as the reader I was left disappointed and empty. There were times when I became irritated with the rambling that had nothing to do with the story of Sadie but seemed to want to tell another tail then just stopped.

Good story with excellent narration.

This story could have been written about my family members from the mountains of West Virginia. The narrators did a wonderful job giving each character v their own personality and bringing the story to life.

Struggled to finish this book

The story line was all over the place. There were characters that had no place in the story. Just when the story settled on a couple of characters, it was over suddenly. I don't recommend this book.
