Summary

A strikingly sincere portrait of a town and its buried secrets from an outstanding new voice in southern fiction.

In a North Carolina mountain town filled with moonshine and rotten husbands, Sadie Blue is only the latest girl to face a dead-end future at the mercy of a dangerous drunk. She's been married to Roy Tupkin for 15 days, and she knows now that she should have listened to the folks who said he was trouble. But when a stranger sweeps in and knocks the world off-kilter for everyone in town, Sadie begins to think there might be more to life than being Roy's wife.

As stark and magnificent as Appalachia itself, If the Creek Don't Rise is a bold and beautifully layered debut about a dusty, desperate town finding the inner strength it needs to outrun its demons. The folks of Baines Creek will take you deep into the mountains with heart, honesty, and homegrown grit.

Multiple character narrative.

This was a first person narrative by multiple characters (at least 8) that didn't follow much of an overall story line, but instead gave a telling of life in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains. It was quite dreary most of the way through but had interesting characters that kept me going.

Fantastic narration

I liked the story line, but really loved the spoken word. Each persons personality came through so clear with the inflection and drawl of their voice. From Sadie to Billy to Kate to Birdy....all wonderfully performed!

The story never fully evolved

The performances were great but as each character is performed your expecting this great mystery or climax. Then it ends with no true mystery or plot. Not the worst book I’ve ever read but with such detail in the character building one one expected way more storyline. It’s as though the author became tired so just said I’ll end it here.
Not the worst but very far from the best.

A bit confusing

Many characters just disappear from story giving it an incomplete feel. I would like to have heard .more from so many others to complete this sad tale.

Not sure what to think

Not at all what I expected, but if you enjoy books with lots of hillbilly dialect, its ok.

Loved it, but ending was abrupt

I really enjoyed this book. The writing was so good. And the narrators both did an amazing job. I liked how each chapter was told by a character in the book. All the characters each possessed such an interesting back story. The ending was good, but abrupt. I would still recommend it this book to others.

Didn't care at all for this book

Sorry to those who might have liked this book but I found it intolerable, so much so that 5 hours into it I am returning it. When it first started I thought it was going to be a good book but the longer I went on the less I liked it. Most of the characters are so one sided and hateful that it just wasn't enjoyable.

Captivating story, extremely well written

Mesmerizing story, drew me in and held me throughout the entire book, from beginning to end. The female narrator was superb, she actually enhanced the story with a nuanced and highly skilled performance. I’m very picky and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the writing and narration.
