About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Jason Pargin’s hilarious and horrifying John Dies at the End series continues with If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe.

"Pargin once again delights with scathing social commentary thinly disguised as an outrageous action novel.... This is a feast." (Publishers Weekly)

If the broken neon signs, shuttered storefronts, and sub-standard housing didn’t tip you off, you’ve just wandered into the city of “Undisclosed”. You don’t want to be caught dead here, because odds are you just might find yourself rising from the grave. That hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting to check out the unusual phenomena that hangs around our town like radioactive fallout. Interdimensional parasites feeding on human hosts, paranormal cults worshipping demonic entities, vengeful teenage sorcerers, we’ve got it all.

Did I mention the possessed toy? It’s a plastic football-sized egg that’s supposed to hatch an adorable, colorful stuffed bird when a child “feeds” it through a synchronized smartphone app. What’s actually inside is an otherworldly monstrosity that’s enticing impressionable wayward youth into murdering folks and depositing their body parts inside the egg as if it’s a hungry piggy bank to trigger the end of the world.

That’s where Dave, John, and Amy come in. They face supernatural threats so the rest of us don’t have to—and sometimes even earn a couple of bucks to so do. But between the bloody ritual sacrifices and soul-crushing nightmares, our trio realizes this apocalypse is way above their pay grade.

I never thought that I'd use that adjective to describe a book in this series, but I stand by it. without losing one iota of the madcap brilliance which is so striking in the previous books this one is truly moving. Social commentary is not something I would of expected here. There's so much love, so much humanity and so much wisdom contained within. Now please, don't let that put you off, as all the stuff you want from John, Dave and Amy is here. In fact it's here in droves. Laugh out loud hilarious, mind-bending, clever and cool as always, just even more so, now with the sense that the author really has something he wanted to say. Not that there isn't always an element of that in his stories. it's just that this one truly took my breath away in that sense. Pargin, for me, has always been a unique voice and his books are all, in my humble opinion, classics. But this one firmly cements him in my mind as the Douglas Adams of epic slacker horror. Joyous, humane, hilarious, witty, wise, deeply original and imaginative, book 4 is my personal favourite. "If..." will be a hard act to follow, but I fully expect the next "Zoe" book to rise to that considerable challenge. One day this guy's books will be universally accepted as the true classics that they undoubtedly are. I want to see them on school reading lists. Thank you Mr Pargin, you've cast a little light into, what has been, for me and mine a pretty douchey year.

Beautiful

As usual these books always put me in a good mood.
Comedy, horror, insightfulness, and awesomeness all in one package.
Would recommend to sadists, and people looking for a good time.

Refreshingly awesome

Creative, fun, abstract, original. Always enjoy Jason / David's novels. This latest novel kept the standard impressively high.

Excellent.

Hilarious, irreverent and ghoulish nihilistic comedy-horror; it's absolutely brilliantly written, genuinely had me laughing out loud multiple times per listening session and always completely gripped by the narrative. There are very few authors who can do what Jason Pargin does, perfectly blending comedy, thriller and horror (although not off-puttingly scary horror at all; more deliberately over the top and even zainy at times - used as an existential vehicle to explore social commentary. I believe the series started life as a web comic so that gives a hint as to the general tone and vibe). The characters are all brilliantly written; detailed and genuine, and that's BOTH all the lead AND the supporting cast; quite the feat! The narrative is fluid, fast moving and gripping and the voice artist performance is spot on to bring all of the above to life. If this is your first encounter with Jason Pargin/The John Dies At The End Series then I'd recommend starting at the beginning as it helps to fully understand everything but it's not strictly required (just very recommended) but trust me you won't regret diving into the whole series.
The only caution is the series is quite rude and graphic so not for kiddos or people particularly against curse words and adults themes (sex, drugs, rock and roll and of course the occult all feature to some degree).
Final rating; 6 out 5 stars!

Another Excellent Addition To The John Dies At The End Series - Outstandingly Fun and Grizzly

If you’re new to the series then congratulations on finding it, enjoy!

If you’ve read the other books first you probably won’t need a review to go ahead and read this one. Everything that you love about the series is included in this novel

More of the same brilliantness
