Revenge is a dish best served...ice cold.

While beach combing on MOD property, two young boys stumble across a reeking mound of tangled kelp. But it isn’t the seaweed that stinks. It’s the decomposing corpse beneath it.

Called in to investigate, DCI Evan Warlow’s team are faced with finding out how and why the body of a struck-off doctor ended up on a lonely beach within sight of Laugharne’s famous boathouse.

But this is no innocent victim. This is a man with more enemies than friends. A fact that muddies the waters no end as Warlow unearths more and more of the dead man’s sordid history. Not to mention a long line of suspects.

With a killer in their midst hell-bent on achieving a deadly goal and determined to let nothing and no one stand in their way, the team need to be on their guard.

Unless they want to end up as victims, too.

Ice Cold Malice is the third book in the DCI Evan Warlow series of Black Beacons thrillers by Rhys Dylan. Set in the heart of wild Wales, this dark murder mystery tinged with wry humor and populated by true-to-life characters will keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, JD Kirk. JM Dalgliesh, TG Reid, and Simon McCleave. Celtic noir with a spattering of dark humor.

I enjoyed the first two books in the series but this one whilst still with the same characters has a weak storyline and has too many obvious red herrings. At times he waffles on (soap box style) on subjects irrelevant to the plot as if padding it out. No complaints about the narrator and I did listen to the end but there's no excitement here.

Disappointing

Love the blossoming friendship with all the main characters & the descriptions of the places in wales. Some stark, some enchanting !

Great character development & story with a twist

I've read (well, listened to) three books in this series and have found them to be excellent reads. The sense of welshness is very strongly defined and not overdone (what I tend to think of as 'boyo literature'). I particularly like the description of characters, locations and the reader's interpretation. The only thing that jarred slightly was the creeping americanisms in the reading (pronunciation of aluminium and privacy come to mind) and even 'faucet' instead of 'tap'. The Americans that I've met are bright enough not to need these modifications so if they were done consciously to chase the American market, they were misplaced as they only irritate Welsh / UK readers. Otherwise, really, really well done. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Gripping read

quite liked continuity of characters background stories and relationships. easy to listen to and not over complicated. I imagine most people will work out "who done it " before the reveal but it doesn't spoil the story. I wouldn't say it was the most exciting or interesting book i've listened to but I will continue to follow Evans cases.
I would just say the narrator is pretty good but I dislike the heavy accent he uses for Jess - it makes her sound very hard and a bit butch. he does get Molly right tho.

average jog a long story

The author has created a detective with a rich balance of strengths and weaknesses with a good team. The storyline in this book is absolutely gripping with a great balance of tension and humour, setbacks and breakthroughs. Have listened to books one and two, which were enjoyed very much but this book came with a change of narrator who made what was already good something superb. All the available books in the series are now in my wish list and please please Audible hurry up with adding all the remaining books and future books to your collection. I give this book, and the whole series of books an extra star for what drew me to this author in the first place, I live near the Pembrokeshire Carmarthenshire border, know the places mentioned and can see them as the story unfolds.

Amazingly gripping listen cannot fault this audiobook.
