Summary

I due ussari fu scritta nel 1856. Il titolo originale era "Padre e figlio" ma fu poi cambiato. Il racconto si svolge in fatti in due periodi diversi, a venti anni di distanza, in cui i due protagonisti sono padre e figlio, e con loro due generazioni a confronto; parallelamente a due personaggi femminili a confronto (anche in questo caso madre e figlia). Calvino osservava che i due Turbin (il più anziano probabilmente si ispirava ad un parente dell'autore) appartenevano rispettivamente alla generazione che aveva sconfitto Napoleone ai primi dell'Ottocento e a quella che nel 1848 aveva represso le rivoluzioni in Polonia e Ungheria. La contrapposizione fra i due non è ispirata a un generico rimpianto del passato, ma a un bilancio dei costi del progresso. Scriveva infatti nel primo capitolo Tolstoj:« Molto di bello e molto di brutto, fra quanto era vecchio, era sparito, molto di bello, fra quanto era nuovo, s'era sviluppato, e molto, anzi molto di più - fra quanto era nuovo - incapace di sviluppo, mostruoso, aveva fatto la sua comparsa sotto il sole ».Cornice musicaledi Balakirev.
