About this listen

Caroline Overington's best seller is a heart-breaking, utterly compelling novel of a family ripped apart.

It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was.

She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

The woman walked out to the car park, towards an old Corolla. For a moment, she held the child gently against her breast and, with her eyes closed, she smelled her. She then clipped the infant into the car, got in and drove off.

That is where the footage ends. It isn't where the story ends, however. It's not even where the story starts.

Not my usual kind of book but I enjoyed immensely. It was both funny and very sad. Well written and great narration.

A must read book.

Window into the complexity of an ordinary family who against a lot of misfortune and misunderstanding from others survived and did their best.
Did question how Cath could let her mentally ill sister drive off at 3am. Also how did Cath being a lawyer not think of looking into if rest of the family could visit Seth?
How did Donna Fay know exactly what ward her baby was in and in such a disconnected state and know her baby?

This book left a few unanswered questions, but overall it was a very human story. Systems set in place that never benefit the families involved and leave behind many victims

Great listen 👍

I loved listening to this story from beginning to end & couldn't wait to pick up where I left off. The narration was so endearing and felt like a true story read by a loved one. I'd like to meet Med.

Narration perfect!

This is such a story of all humanity. It touched my heart and soul. I love how it was told and how it was narrated.

I stayed up late to finish this book

I can’t get enough of Caroline Overington’s books. The combination of character development and research into the subject are always top notch. I was glued to this book from beginning to end. I just have one small gripe about the subject matter. This being that community care is cheaper and worse than institutional care. I could have a really good discussion with C.O about that. I guess it would have been straying too far away from the storyline to debate it within the plot.

High quality writing
