On the whole a good story and well.read by Gemma Oaten, but the over use of the same profane word (s**t) for expressing heightened emotions became waring and quite irritating.

An entertaining story

I love Louise Beech's writing. She seems to be able to write in any genre she chooses, and I loved this atmospheric supernatural/ghostly thriller set in a small theatre in Hull.

The story takes place in dual timelines. In the past friends, Chloe, Jess and Ryan, use a ouija board backstage at the Dean Wilson Theatre. The theatre is said to be haunted by Morgan Miller, the actress who played the lead role in the musical Dust, and was murdered in her dressing room. The killer was never caught. In the present Chloe is now an usher at the theatre and the musical Dust is about to be performed again for the first time since Morgan's death.

The book is mesmerising, beautifully written and brilliantly constructed. The ouija board parts were so creepy that I had goosebumps as I listened. The theatre setting is so realistically described that I felt I was really there. The characters are all well drawn, and I really liked Chloe, who was physically as well as mentally scarred with no self belief. She is so fragile that I could almost feel her pain. I had my fingers crossed that things would come right for her. The ending broke my heart, but was perfect!

It was great to listen to local Hull actress, Gemma Oaten, narrating and she did a fantastic job.

This is a really unusual tale, a ghost story of sorts. It mixes murder, superstition and theatrics to blend into a thought provoking coming of age and midlife drama.
The accents and dramatisation are beautifully executed for an all round immersive experience.
