About this listen

France, May 1940. Seated in the cockpit of his Hurricane, Sergeant George Yeoman - young, eager, and innocent in the ways of war - is on his way to join his first operational squadron.

Meanwhile, the German Panzers advance unchecked through the Ardennes, and as the Allied bombers plead to strike at them, the Luftwaffe is already set to launch a decisive blow. Disaster beckons, and Yeoman and No. 505 Squadron soon find themselves courting death in a series of increasingly desperate sorties as the Allied army begins its retreat towards Dunkirk. There are only a handful of them against the might of Hitler’s war machine, and with each sortie the ranks of the Squadron grow ever more depleted.

The odds stacked against them are hopeless....

This was by some distance the biggest disappointment I've yet experienced on Audible. Almost every other narrator I've encountered has been good, often very good indeed, but Guy Mott - if he really exists - is truly terrible. The reason I say 'if' is that for a while I became convinced that this was some narrator-bot that Amazon was trying out to see if anyone noticed. I'm still not 100% sure. The reading is indeed robotic...almost nothing in the way of dynamic range, excruciating attempts at accents (or none at all), little variation in pace or tone. And some serious mis-pronounciation, not just of French and German words but of quite familiar English ones. Do you know anyone who says arithMETic rather than aRITHmeTIC? Well now you do. And worse still, for its frequent repetition, is Luftwaffe being pronounced Luft-waff. Yes, really. It's like being read to by a sat-nav.

It ruined any enjoyment I or my 12 year-old son might have got from a book I first discovered when I was 12. Robert Jackson's twelve-book series of airborne adventures, following George Yeoman through WW2 and beyond, is too well-written and accomplished to be regarded as solely for younger readers - it's a moving and convincing depiction not just of air combat but everything that goes on around it too. But I won't be bothering with any more because it is genuinely unlistenable. We both gave up around the half-way mark.

Dreadful narration...is this even a real human?

Sergeant Yeoman newly arrived Fighter pilot is thrown into the chaos of the Battle of France. A well written entertaining story full of daring exploits but also covering the realities of war. Some interesting historical details,are thrown into a good story with great characters. Narration is excellent but with a few odd pronunciations. Well worth a listen

This book is from the growing genre of fact based fiction from the second world war and is very good .
I am a fan of this type of book and i think we will see much more of this type of thing now the veterans are getting thin on the ground .

An absolutely incredible story about the brave men of the British and French Allied air forces who’s sacrifices insured we have our freedom today. A must listen for any one who loves history and respects the greatest generation ever to live.
