About this listen

Are you interested in writing your own book?

Many of us would love to jot down our fondest stories and our tallest tales to preserve forever in written form. But wanting to do something and knowing how to do it are two different things. This is not a book about sentence structure and grammar, but a book on helping you keep your head in the game once you’ve decided that writing a book is something you might like to do.

In this book, you'll discover:

How to cultivate and follow through on big ideas

What it takes to keep your attention and focus on your story

How to write physically: sit down and write a book, from blank page to "The End."

Do you want to learn how to write a nonfiction book or explore the world of prose?

With chapters that address self-care and staying motivated, her book specifically doesn’t guarantee that you’ll learn how to write a bestseller. Instead, author Lauren Bingham helps budding authors prepare for the reality of the process ahead of them. Her witty remarks and empathetic style gently guide first-timers.

In true “how to write a book for dummies" style, listeners of this book will find:

Steps you might want to take in order to set yourself up for success as you plan your book.

Practical, if not brutally honest, advice for remaining calm and focused throughout the writing process.

The emotional toll editing can take on you, and how a good sense of humor and an open mind can help you learn plenty about yourself while setting your first book up for success.

From navigating the myriad of roadblocks that can occur when making dreams a reality to getting your words to the masses, Lauren Bingham has delivered an informal yet essential look at the writing process for anyone who needs the gentle push of words of wisdom and inspiration.

I've been wondering whether no one else has listened to this audio book, or no one cared enough to rate it yet or ... others before me were faced with the same dilemma:

The author seems really nice. She's easy to like and so we do. There's nothing offensive or downright wrong in this book, either, and the narration is pleasant. All of which makes it hard to be honest a.k.a. critical. The problem is, however: there's nothing new here. Any listener who has had at least a fleeting glance at writing, already knows (as good as) everything in here. For those for whom this really is their first book on writing: there are other books with far more value. (This is not a particularly useful summary of those books, either.)

The author seems to be aware of that, as she mentions one of her previous books has been harshly critiqued as "nothing new, just a collection of facts readily available on the internet" (or words to that effect). She goes on to say she has no problem with that. In fact, she's happy with it. Well ... it shows.

This audio book is free of charge, so no real harm done. I'm even giving it 3 stars as it's pleasant to listen to. There is, however, almost nothing to learn from it. So if you really want to gain insight into writing a book, you should probably look elsewhere.
