Summary

Ever been tempted by running a marathon? Maybe you’re well on your way to conquering the iconic distance. In any case, you’ve come to the right place! Join marathon-pro Vassos Alexander as he shows us why we shouldn’t be afraid of attempting the 26-mile stretch once and for all.

Every marathon runner’s journey is different. You might have caught the bug after experiencing that adrenaline rush of completing your first 5k; it might be a desire to finally cross something off your bucket list; or, perhaps it was a bit of an absentminded afterthought while watching TV, crisps in hand, and a niggling voice saying ‘maybe I could do that’ - it was for Vassos, at least. However far along you are in your journey, How to Run a Marathon shows us that absolutely anyone can take those first steps to defeating the distance. In fact, you’ll probably end up enjoying it a lot more than you think.

Including inspiring interviews with running legends, charming tales of remarkable marathons throughout the world, crucial training and nutrition tips and so much more, Vassos shares all the lessons he’s learnt - from the start line to the finish line.

Funny, candid and motivating, this book will not only help you succeed in marathon running but empower you to complete the distance the way you want to. Whether that’s achieving a particular time, or simply finishing in one piece, How to Run a Marathon will guide you through.

Decent but not brilliant

I like Vassos Alexander’s writing style (descriptive and engaging but with no self-indulgent waffle) so I was keen to read this.

This book is a decent read for runners of all abilities. I particularly liked hearing the stories of lots of other runners (although paying a few more voice actors would have helped in this arena) but it is annoying how many of his stories he repeats in his books. Presumably he thinks readers will never read more than one?

If you’re not going to add much more new content, just update your old books, rather than releasing a new one. It’s disrespectful to your loyal readers and looks as though you’re more interested in making money than creating a high-quality, unique read.

Totally unoriginal. Buy something else

if you have read other books by Vassos or on running, skip this and save your money. The only truly original part was on menstrual cycle and running and one story on running during the pandemic. There are plenty other running books worth your attention, including others by the same author.

Realistic, funny, informative

I've been jogging now for 6 months and have been increasing my distance and speed to try and aim for a marathon one day. This book has helped eased my anxieties about taking part in a marathon and has given me hope that one day I will take part in a Marathon. Vassos is funny and he and his speakers give you insight and perspectives of each person's individual journey. There is great guidance on courses, stretching, fuelling, running and all sorts of other things that can give you the confidence to make it to a marathon yourself one day.

Dissapointed as expected better

I really enjoyed Alexanders two previous books but this felt that this book was too introspective and at times came across as slightly pretentious. It didn't flow well and the narrators voices with faux accents to suit the source of the text was really annoying.

On the plus side there are some good running tips in the book that will appeal to beginner and established runners but as a book in its own entirety I felt it failed to hit the mark.

In comparison to the his last two books which I really enjoyed and recommended to friends and family this is dissapointing and I won't be recommending this one, here's hoping the next one will be a return to form.

Not Vassos's best

I loved his previous two books but not as keen on this one. Too many interruptions from guests and their inputs distract from the usually excellent Vassos. Disappointed.

Fantastic

Just listened to this as I’m preparing for my first marathon. Absolutely fantastic. What an inspiration. Love all the inspiring runners who have their own little inspirational stories too. I laughed and learnt. Just finished it and now I’m going to listen to it all over again. Love it.
