Summary

Listening helps us be there for others, to support them in tough times and to strengthen our relationships with partners, family, friends and colleagues.

From opening up a conversation with someone who might be struggling, to how to use gentle encouragement to help others share their stories, How to Listen demonstrates the power of listening without judgement and draws on the extensive experience of Samaritans in offering practical advice to apply to your own life.

Friendly and approachable, with a preface by Michael Palin, it includes helpful tips from trained Samaritans on how to talk about how we are feeling, as well as how to listen to one another in a way that can prevent day-to-day concern or worry from escalating into more complex emotions.

Loved the pace and way it was read. Very enjoyable to listen to and lots of important things to be reminded of (from someone whose job and friendships involve putting this into practice).

Really enjoyed.

Really insightful and interesting look at how to help someone when they are going through a troubling time. Provides practical tips and real life case studies to bring the theory to life. Inspiring and up beat it provides a light to follow for people who want to help others out of darkness.

We should all listen to this

There are some interesting bits to this, but as someone has said it is more of an advert for the Samaritans than it suggests it will be on the cover. It is also, as a result, very focused on people in crisis, rather than being a general guide that is obviously applicable to everyday (non-crisis) situations and life. That isn’t to say there aren’t good tips within it, but if you aren’t picking it up because you have someone in real trouble and you want to know where to turn or what to do, and you just want to know how to listen better in, say, an everyday work situation, then the Samaritans part may become a little annoying.

Some good tips, but too focused on crisis
