Stung by the pioneering space successes of the Soviet Union - in particular, Gagarin being the first man in space - the United States gathered the best of its engineers and set itself the goal of reaching the moon within a decade. In an expanded second edition of How Apollo Flew to the Moon, David Woods tells the exciting story of how the resulting Apollo flights were conducted by following a virtual flight to the moon and its exploration of the surface. From launch to splashdown, he hitches a ride in the incredible spaceships that took men to another world, exploring each step of the journey and detailing the enormous range of disciplines, techniques, and procedures the Apollo crews had to master. While describing the tremendous technological accomplishment involved, he adds the human dimension by calling on the testimony of the people who were there at the time. He provides a wealth of fascinating and accessible material: the role of the powerful Saturn V, the reasoning behind trajectories, the day-to-day concerns of human and spacecraft health between two worlds, the exploration of the lunar surface, and the sheer daring involved in traveling to the moon during the mid-20th century.
Given the tremendous success of the original edition of How Apollo Flew to the Moon, the second edition will have a new chapter on surface activities, inspired by user comments on Amazon. There will also be additional detail in the existing chapters to incorporate all the feedback from the original edition.

The best book there is about Apollo
I have this book in print, but wanted to read it again while I was overseas, so downloaded this version. It’s a superbly detailed explanation of just about every aspect of the Apollo moon missions from start to finish. Although it’s very thorough it’s not beyond the grasp of the non-specialist reader. It’s liberally illustrated with quotes from the various crews and the ground teams in Houston. Reading a book as technical as this must be very challenging indeed, but the narrator rises to the task admirably. Essential reading for any serious Apollo nerd!

Wonderfully detailed description of Apollo
This book provides great detail of the equipment and procedures needed to acomplish an Apollo mission. It answers many questions of How did they do it?... I highly recommend it to those looking for the more technical apsects of the Apollo missions.

A fantastic book
This one is by far the best book on the topic of flying to the moon. It’s not just a story, it’s a manual and a how to. It has silenced a few critics who disputed the events of the era. When one flys a controlled explosion on a Saturn, and then rides a fire ball back, the journey to the moon is a little safer but a challenge In itself.
Worth the read / listen.

Excellent coverage of a fascinating topic
Sooo much more substantial in terms of information about what actually was done in the Apollo programme, and how it was accomplished. Too few books take us into the details behind the headlines. My fellow countryman Mr W. David Woods does this in abundance, whilst never rambling and always staying sharply on
Point within his beautifully structured work.
A brief nod to narration quality too: conveyed the information in engaging manner whilst always ensuring the story itself remained centre stage, not the narrator.
Thank you everyone involved, your efforts yielded a classic of its type.

Apollo Bible
This book is about the mechanics of the Apollo Missions told to a lay person like me. It is beautifully constructed and the first person quotes from the Astronauts, Cap Coms and folks in Mission Control bring the story to life. It is narrated with gusto, clear and enthusiastic. Every Apollo fan should listen.
