About this listen
Atticus O'Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he's twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.
Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he's hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power - plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish - to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.
This is book one of the Iron Druid Chronicles series. If you would like to hear more, you will find the first chapter of book two – Hexed – at the end of this recording.
©2011 Kevin Hearne (P)2013 Hachette AudioThis is obviously the recipe that Kevin Hearne followed writing this book, and it's bloody brilliant! (I use the word "Bloody" as an adjective in this case as there are a fair number of sword fights and other violent episodes in this book!)
The characters are believable (I believe that if I knew a 21 year old who happened to be a 2000 year old Druid, he'd act this way!) and the story keeps clipping along.
All in all, well worth a read, and well worth 5 stars!
Comic fantasy in Pratchett's league!

There were enough laughs to contrast with the death and destruction here, as well as the gradual development of the protagonist Atticus, although this will need to continue rapidly in the next installment if this character is to escape its current two dimensional nature. Neil Gaiman’s American Gods is much superior, with more convincing characterisations. Perhaps this is to do with the Hearn's none too convincing notion that the protagonist looks and behaves like a 21 year old stud, to the degree that he beds several gods in the story?
Although there was little thought of moral dilemmas here (normal humans mean little to the Druid or Gods and are destroyed with little thought), there is a kind of code becoming evident, again this will need enhancing to keep the audience hooked.
So 8/10 - if fantasy in contemporary setting is your thing this will fill a gap.
Light entertainment

I would have preferred an Irish narrator due to the characters origin but he does a good job - Note: I have since found out the main character has been in America long enough to have picked up the accent, therefore have no problem with this.
Enjoyable fantasy

Would you listen to Hounded again? Why?
I downloaded this book for my holidays thinking it might be an interesting read, I could not turn it off. I loved the characters, the style of writing and the action. I will probably listen to all the books in this series again at some stage.Who was your favorite character and why?
Is it a bit sad when a grown man says his favourite character is Oberon the Irish woofhound! I loved listening to his view of the world and the conversations he has Atticus. I like a book that makes me laugh out loud and all of Kevin Hearnes books have given me great pleasure to read.Have you listened to any of Christopher Ragland’s other performances? How does this one compare?
This was the first time i had listened to Christopher but by the time I worked my way through all six books I had never tired of his excellent narration. He managed to get excited, angry, and knows how to swear well! He really brought the books to life which is so important and plays a talking dog fantastically .Fantastic series of books
