About this listen

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history

'I loved this book so much' ANN PATCHETT

'Brilliantly varied and with a galloping pace' MAIL ON SUNDAY

'A masterpiece' JANE SMILEY

'Thrilling' NEW YORK TIMES

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamour of any racetrack.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse - one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington, who became America's greatest stud sire, Horse is an original, gripping, multi-layered reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America.

This was my first venture into audio books and it did not disappoint. More than that, the story of a boy’s love for a horse that was his in all but name was inspiring and added a new level of appreciation of my own horses. Of course, this novel is much more than the tale of a boy’s love for his horse, and I was invested in the stories of all the characters and how their differing lives and times became so deeply entwined. Highly recommended.

Wonderful - and equestrian friendly

Overall, this was a beautiful story that had a horse at the centre of it, but which came alive through the stories of the people across different timelines, who are connected to the horse in some way

By far most compelling timeline was the story of Jarrett and his lifelong relationship with the horse and the emotional and political influences that shaped his story. Reading about the black experience of horse racing in Kentucky in the run-up to the Civil War was fascinating and something I knew nothing about yet through the absolutely beautifully drawn character of Jarrett it became real and human and emotional.

I was less compelled by Theo’s timeline, I think in part due to the narration which I found stilted and a bit overly theatrical. I also felt that Theo was less believable not because of his intellect or his backstory, but more down to his flawless morals and impeccable manners. He was almost too good to be true

The third timeline that focused on the paintings of Lexington and other art from around that time, was interesting and even more so once I’ve listened to thewood and realised that most of it was based on his historical fact

Definitely worth a read and would recommend

.

Beautiful story - some timelines more compelling than others

A captivating story of a famous race horse and an enslaved groom, surviving the the tough world of racing, racism, and civil war. I loved every minute of the story.

The love snd connection between the horse and groom

I became really committed to this novel. I liked the storylines, the relevance of the background material and the characters’ strands. Multiple narrators can be an advantage, but runs the risk of weaker ones. There was a degree of predictability but a real effort made to connect the past and present and highlight persisting american racism. To an extent there was a sense of events being contrived and the novel would have succeeded (avoiding spoilers…) without the late cataclysmic event. I did appreciated GB’s revealing ‘Afterword’ where she describes her own journey which was reflected in the plot.
