About this listen

The first of a major Feist acquisition, returning to his best-loved series.

FREEDOM AT ANY PRICE?

Hartraft’s Marauders, a crack band of Kingdom raiders, are a special unit designed to infiltrate and fight behind enemy lines. They are currently heading for a frontier garrison, after a disastrous encounter with the Tsurani.

Meanwhile, a Tsurani patrol is sent to support an assault on the same garrison. Both sides arrive at the same time and discover the garrison has been overrun by a migrating horde of moredhel (dark elves) and they are forced by circumstances to band together and fight as one to survive.

The only problem is, who do they hate the most – their mutual enemy, or each other? As they make their way across the unknown Northlands to freedom, they have to struggle not only with the elements and their enemies, but also their conscience. For what is more important – one’s life or one’s honour?

Another exceptional story

I have listened to all of the 23 core books in the Riftwar Cycle but never the additional stories. I’m now listening again but in true chronological order and this time I’ve included the three Legends of the Riftwar stories.

I listened to Honoured Enemy after Magician, Daughter of the Empire and Servant of the Empire. Silverthorn will follow once I’ve finished the next two side stories.

I found it hard to get into this story to begin mostly due to the unfamiliar characters and a different narrator, who in my opinion is not as good as Peter Joyce (or maybe I’m just so used to to him).

I eventually did get into the story and found it provided an interesting perspective into the cultures of each race and their soldiers. I found myself warming to the characters and found the story provided a neatly tangible understanding of the Midkemia landscapers during the war and harsh winter.

If like me you can’t enough of these books, it is definitely worth including these.

I stopped reading Feist years ago and now I’m once again enjoying novels he’s written since then.

Great story - moving!
