About this listen
Murder, trauma, and raising children—who said love was easy?
Mac and Tony thought the hard part was over. They’re together openly as a couple, sharing a home and building a life with their two kids. It’s what they dreamed of.
But daughter Anna struggles with the changes, Ben is haunted by old secrets, Mac’s job in Homicide still demands too much of his time, and Tony is caught in the middle. It’ll take everything these men can give to create a viable balance between home and work. Especially when life refuses to give them a break.
(This is a lightly edited rerelease of the 2012 original novel.)

I think it is advised to read the previous books in this series first. Those are the background to getting here.
There is so much emotion to this book. Mac and Tony are living somewhat of a routine life when all their lives are placed in chaos. Mac is working on a case and it doesn’t go as expected. I think listening to the narrator describe so much from Mac’s point of view makes this story stronger. There is plenty of emotion going on with the rest of the characters that the mystery part seems to be a minor thing. The children add plenty to the heart breaking parts of the story. I really hate cliffhangers and don’t know if I’d have invested in this if I’d have known I’d have to wait for the rest of the story. This backs up my opinion that I think cliffhangers need to be published all at once.
Intense story but a cliffhanger

"Home Work" begins where most stories end: after the happy ending. Tony and Mac have moved in together and now they are struggling with the usual everyday problems that everyone knows. It's not always easy to balance the relationship, the kids, the job and the household. It's no different for Mac and Tony and yet with all the problems there is never a hint of doubt of their love.
The story is very emotional and that affects several characters. The backstory of the children Ben and Anna is heartbreaking.
Mac is investigating a new case as a homicide detective, which is exciting and tested more than just my nerves with an unexpected twist.
I have rarely been so captivated and at the same time so touched by an audio book. A large part of this was due to J. F. Harding, who has an incredible talent for portraying emotions convincingly and believably. He was the perfect choice for this great story. I loved the audiobook and J. F. Harding took it to the next level.
Highly recommended and I can't wait to listen to the final installment in the series.
Awesome series and a brilliant narration

J.F. Harding does a wonderful job of narrating this series, and this story was no exception. I loved the way he narrated Mac so sympathetically [read the story, you'll understand why]. The wedding scene of course was great, and it would appear that major changes are about to happen in the Hart/MacLean household.
***Book Review 2013***
Loved, loved, loved it!
Well, haven't the guys come a long way in a short time!! There's a wedding on the cards, Mac is openly gay at work now even though he's still got some morons to deal with(no, didn't mean you Oliver or Ramsey!!), the kids appear to be settling into family life, there are still villains to catch (and this was quite a complex case which Mac was sometimes uncomfortable with, read the book...you'll find out why), Tony is still teaching as well as doing the bulk of the work bringing the kids up (and feeling resentful sometimes about it too).
In this book, we get to meet Tony's sister Jaime and his mum Gina (Granny), Bree is still around, helpful as ever. Brenda, well, not so much...in fact towards the end of the book, she departs for pastures new. This book mostly deals with what it's like to be part of a family...something the kids definitely haven't had, Tony still has albeit in a limited way with his parents and sister, but Mac hasn't had in an awful long time, if ever.
Of course, there are shocking parts, and I'm not going to go into them here, again...read the book, and the part where Mac gets injured, and nearly killed...to say I was upset is an understatement, but all in all, this was a lovely, heartwarming and emotional book, and all I've got left now is 'Compensations', boohoo!! Many thanks Kaje for another very welcome slice of life in the MacLean/Hart household.
Superb performance yet again from Mr Harding 🥳🥳
