Summary

Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake), he is not surprised.

Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five feet wide by five feet deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie, and Stanley must dig up the truth.

Wonderfully inventive, compelling and hilarious, Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece.

Critic reviews

" Holes is one of those instant classics that adults, as well as children over eight, will thoroughly enjoy. Sachar has created something quite different from JK Rowling or Philip Pullman, but no less enchanting." ( Independent on Sunday)
"If you want a witty, moving listen that grabs you and never lets up, look no further than Holes." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Holes is great, people are just mean

A very enjoyable, heartwarming and funny story that really does blow your mind on some occasions, the characters are well realised and prove to be compelling. I enjoyed the non-linear narrative and the interwoven plot lines which really prompted some thought provoking questions, the narrator's voice was also pleasant to listen to. My only problems are the loose ends at the end of the audiobook but I suppose that was intentional and how everything seems a bit too convenient to be realistic.

Could be so much better

Interesting idea but badly written. There's no real character or story development and everything is very abrupt rather than drawing you in. The narrator uses horrible racially stereotyped accents but only once the race of each character is introduced in the story. Having heard him narrate other titles he should be banned from attempting any accent other than his own.

This is a brilliant story, which really comes to life in this audio reading. Good for adults to listen to, as well as older children.

No Holes In This Plot

This was a brilliant story in so many ways. I loved the mini-stories in between that feed into the main story of Stanley. And it covers some interesting discussion points with regards to race, and equality. A great story for Year 5 up!

Fabulous Feel-Good Literature

One of the best stories I've come across in a long time. Sachar makes you fall in love with his beautiful narrative which will stay with you for a long time. "Holes" is the epitome of what youth literature should be -- something to be loved by children of all ages. Like everything on Audible, the reading is superb. Often too little is made of this, but the outstanding quality of the productions and the skill of the actors doing the reading really stand to Audible's credit.
