About this listen

Alexander Lawson is a former detective for Northern Ireland's police force. After a disastrous six-month stint in the drug squad, he became addicted to heroin and resigned in disgrace. Now 24, sickly, and on the dole, Alex learns that his high-school love, Victoria Patawasti, has been murdered in America. Victoria's wealthy family sends Alex to Colorado to investigate the case, and he seizes the opportunity for a chance at redemption.

But things don't go as planned. Plagued by a heroin habit, forced to go on the run after the only credible witness to Victoria's murder is accidentally killed, wanted by both the Colorado cops and the Ulster police, Alex struggles just to stay alive.

Gritty, with spot-on dialogue and black humor, Hidden River is a dynamic thriller.

"This is not only an expertly crafted suspense novel but also a revealing study of addiction." (Publishers Weekly)
"A storyteller with the kind of style and panache that blur the line between genre and mainstream."(Kirkus Reviews)

Great narration and a good story. Realistic gritty and entertaining right up to the end.

Really enjoyed this book!!

I may have persevered with following the storyline had the narration not been quite so laborious and long-winded, A beautiful Irish accent which unfortunately never varied its cadences.

Not a particularly brilliant listening experience

It can take a while to sink into this book, to go with the flow of words, emotions and foolish decisions, but it's worth it. A difficult listen perhaps and yet it's a story of redemption. I loved it.

A dark and twisted tale

The Belfast accent is a musical, melodic sound. This narration did not do it well, but if you can stick with it it does improve. Story ok, bit unnecessarily wordy at times, and an easy guess as to “ whodunnit” well before the ending. Enjoyable enough, though.

Reasonable

I wish I had read this, not listened. Mr. Doyle’s Northern Irish accent will haunt me for many a long day to come. I’m sure he executes narration in an English or southern Irish accent beautifully, but this northern irish effort? Ouch. I sped up 1.25x and it made it somewhat better.
I love Adrian Mckinty’s books and have read everything else of his, but I wish his audio books were narrated appropriately- it really took from the story.

If you’re irish/northern irish - this is the wrong narrator for a great story
