About this listen

Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an author of short stories and novels based in Louisiana. This story was published in Vogue in 1895.

The story begins with a woman trying to get rid of letters which are the only evidence of her having an affair outside her marriage. Having burned some of them, she cannot proceed with burning the rest because emotions overwhelmed her. She then leaves the rest to her husband with the message: "I leave this package to the care of my husband. With perfect faith in his loyalty and his love, I ask him to destroy it unopened." When the woman died, her husband threw the letters in the river, but he is consumed by jealousy and paranoia regarding the contents of the letters.
