Tara Richards was just a girl when she lost her mother. Years later, when Tara receives a letter from a London solicitor, its contents shake her to the core. Someone has left her a key to a safe deposit box.

In the box lies an object that will change everything Tara thought she knew and lead her on a journey to deepest Spain in search of the answers that have haunted her for 40 years.

Violet Skye regrets her decision to travel abroad leaving her young daughter behind. As the sun dips below the mountains, she reminds herself she is doing this for their future. Tonight, 4th June 1978, will be the start of a new life for them. This night will indeed change Violet's destiny, in the most unexpected of ways....

Another wonderful novel by Kathryn Hughes

Beautiful story and relatable characters which were portrayed perfectly by Rachel Atkins. I always feel so sentimental when I read/listen to Kathryn's books and this one hasnt disappointed just as expected. The chapters flowed really well and the story kept me gripped right to the end. Can't wait for the next one now 😀

Gentle story of the lost years

I do like Kathryn Hughes books, she writes clearly concisely and there is no getting lost with her descriptions of all her colorful characters. This is not her best book, but nevertheless still good. It is set in 1978 and the modern day, moving back and forth with each chapter filling the gaps over the years. She pulls in all the threads throughout and ties them neatly at the end. You can feel the emotions of each character as you follow them through the story. Yes I would recommend as a lighter read.

A WONDERFUL, WELL WRITTEN STORY WITH ENDEARING CHARACTERS.

Wonderful story read by a fantastic narrator. I loved the characters, and wanted to know what happened to them as I progressed through each chapter. This is a glorious tale of love, life, family & enduring hope. Yep, it’s fair to say, I found this book pretty special. Never read anything by this author before, but I’m looking forward to trying another. Isn’t it lovely when you discover a new author to add to your list of favourites.

What a sad tale!

The narrator was very good I found the sequence of events difficult. A very interesting story.

Disappointing

Quite disjointed story line felt very contrived. Big disappointment after reading The Key which was excellent.

Very enjoyable!

I really loved this book - the story was gripping and the narrator was brilliant! I did feel it had a lot of "padding" which wasn't really relevant to the story but I still loved it. Highly recommended

A Story of Substance

After a summer of reading Chick Lits, summer romances etc I fancied a book with some depth. This was my first Kathryn Hughes book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially that I hadn’t managed to work out the whole plot before I’d got half was through the book 😆 A tale of struggle, secrets and the love of family. One of the most realistic I’ve read In a long time. Beautifully read by Rachel Atkins as usual. The only thing I thought she could have done better with was Tara’s age at the start of the story. Her and Toms declaring love for each other was a bit off for a 14 year old. I’d love to find there’s a sequel, but either way I’m definitely looking forward to my next Kathryn Hughes Story 💜

Excellent - full of twists and turns!

I loved this book and was absolutely hooked listening to it. The narration was excellent - great distinction between characters. The story moved at a good pace. My only criticism is that the ending felt a little rushed and could have done with a little more explanation, but it did not hugely impact on my enjoyment of the story and I can’t wait to read/listen to more from this author. Would thoroughly recommend if you like time-hop stories - this went back and forth from 1978 - 2018.

Excellent character development

Enjoyed this book because of the excellent character development. Don’t know if the narrator,Rachel Atkins made the characters come alive or the author, Kathryn Hughes wrote a novel with many twists and turns.

Very well written book.

This is the 4th book I have read by this author. Each one has been very entertaining. I love her style of intrigue. She lets you keep guessing how the twist and turns occur. Makes you love her characters. Still have to think about ending of epilogue.

Enjoyable, Different

A wonderful story. wonderfully read. There were so many different voices, inflections, and accents. You would have thought more than one person was reading because they were so well done. The performance was truly excellent!!! I really enjoyed listening.

Not Kathryn Hughes' best story.

I've read all of her books and loved them all. As this one started out very slow and was awfully boring. Any other book and I would have quit listening, but this was Kathryn Hughes! I was a fan and this book had to get better!!!! It did get better, but only the last half. The narrator was great.

I loved it

Kathryn Hughes is one of my favorite writers and I think this was her best but I say that every time! Tara is 15 when her mother goes off on holiday to Italy with her boyfriend. Tara thought she was going too but the boyfriend made sure she didn't. Tara's mother never came home and she never found out what happened to her. I like the way Ms. Hughes tells a story and the way you never know what is going to happen until the last chapter. And when it is explained it all seems so simple. I think I have read everything she has written and I can't wait for the next mystery.

Was different

I was confused at time as it felt like I was hearing 3 totally unrelated stories that made not one wit of sense. Several times I stopped to re read the books description. But in the end they all come together and you “get” it. No spoilers. Narration fantastic. Unbelievably well done.
