About this listen

Buried past

In spite of a dark secret still haunting her, Detective Jacqueline Frye is trying to move on. Until a 100-year-old case gives her a new purpose.

When Jacqueline, a self-professed detective with a dark secret, arrives in Whitechapel, she becomes embroiled in one of London's greatest mysteries.

Buried secrets

When Jacqueline Frye heads to Chicago for a wedding, she never expects a homicide case to land in her lap. Another copycat killer is on the loose, and this time the culprit is obsessed with America’s first serial killer, H. H. Holmes. As Jack navigates secret passageways, coded journals, and charming locals, more victims disappear and the mystery deepens. Then there’s Jack’s best friend, Evelyn, who seems to be hiding a big secret....

So I'm a huge fan of this author and the mystery/haunting series. I guess I was expecting something along those lines but ended up with a weird ride that I'm just not sure how I feel about it.
Follow a wannabe detective/horror buff as she goes around weaseling her way into an existing investigation into a copycat killer of the famous Ripper. Somehow this horror buff is able to solve what the authorities couldn't and seems to think it's ok to lie, cheat and steal her way to the solution...but in the second book, the tables are turned, she becomes quiet indignant when the shoe is on the other foot.
I found it really hard to believe at time at the sheer audacity of the character whom is nothing more then an internet sleuth.
I also found her relationship with her BFF bordering on a romantic relationship. I don't know why and the author didn't elude to it but there's close and then there's CLOSE. As a grown adult woman, I would not share my bed with my BFF. We can afford two beds if we need to share a hotel. I'm just saying...

Not what I was expecting

Currently this combination of author and narrator are my go to listens and this box set did not disappoint. This was a new series for me and I really enjoyed it - went with some of the plot points as although a bit implausible worked. If I could drive from London to Oxford in an hour that would be incredible.
The first book is set in England, the second in Chicago.

Great listen a new favourite series
