About this listen

This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces.

An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history.

As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general listener and the serious historian.

Well researched, interesting book. Didn’t like style of storyteller, she was boring and sounded in some parts as though she was laughing!

As expected from Alison Weir, the content is fantastic.
However, what I find quite annoying is how certain names are pronounced. A more homogenous reading with other books would have been much more appreciated.

Very interesting

A well-written account of the life and times of Henry VIII from a quite different perspective, I found if both informative and enjoyable. Beautifully read by Phyllida Nash, I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in this period of history.

Excellent

Unlike almost every other book I didn't change to listen anything else until I go to the end. Loved the fascinating but undramatised facts. Very easy to listen to.

Couldn't stop listening.
