Power imbalance isn’t romantic

Hugo is the entitled heir to a fortune and must marry and produce an heir to inherit. Nolan has worked for Hugo and is secretly in love with him. They date, argue, and work together. I didn’t love this for a bunch of reasons: (1) Hugo called the shots 95% of the time and I didn’t enjoy the power imbalance or his attitude - Nolan was basically expected to add household and parenting duties to his job description; (2) the authors told me they were in love but didn’t show me through the characters’ actions or feelings; (3) the side romance between two minor characters was tangential and distracting; (4) the tone was overly ‘cosy’, the emotions and setup didn’t feel real; and (5) the narration was solid but mistakes hadn’t been edited out - it was jarring when a sentence or phrase was repeated.
