About this listen

In Heartbreak Hotel by New York Times No.1 bestseller Jonathan Kellerman, criminal psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware investigates the death of his most mysterious patient to date. Fans of Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben will revel in this knife-sharp storytelling from the master of psychological suspense.

At nearly one hundred years old, Thalia Mars is a far cry from the patients child psychologist Alex Delaware normally treats. But the charming, witty woman convinces Alex to meet with her in a suite at the Aventura, a luxury hotel with a checkered history.

What Thalia wants from Alex are answers to unsettling questions about guilt, patterns of criminal behavior, victim selection. When Alex asks the reason for her morbid fascination, Thalia promises to tell all during their next session. But when he shows up the following morning, he is met with silence: Thalia is dead in her room.
When questions arise about how Thalia perished, Alex and homicide detective Milo Sturgis must peel back the layers of a fascinating but elusive woman s life and embark on one of the most baffling investigations either of them has ever experienced.

For Thalia Mars is a victim like no other, an enigma who harbored nearly a century of secrets and whose life and death draw those around her into a vortex of violence.

Sadly some books just don't translate into audio very well ... pity because the story was good

What disappointed you about Heartbreak Hotel?

The whole story just plodded along.

What was most disappointing about Jonathan Kellerman’s story?

The characters left me completely cold, as they trudged through a trail of boring crime.

What didn’t you like about John Rubinstein’s performance?

And then there's the narrator. How laboured do you want to be? If there was any excitement in the plot or the characters, he sucked it all out.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I'm disappointed with myself that I persevered with it. Really, really poor. Won't be bothering with Jonathan Kellerman or - more particularly - anything narrated by John Rubinstein.

tedious, dreary

Not a patch on the Alex Delaware books, quite dull. Cant believe they are written by the same author, I have returned it.
