About this listen

A lush and lyrical folklore inspired fantasy adventure from a startling new talent, with a joyous magic reminiscent of Neil Gaiman and Studio Ghibli.

There are more deities and daemons in the world than stars in the sky. But only Heartseers like Anise Star can see them—because only they still believe...

Anise's job is to help humans and daemons live happily together. But when the villainous Mr Babbitt tries to steal her home in the White Woods and drive the daemons out, she is forced to travel to the capital to ask the High King for help. First, though, she'll have to convince him that daemons still exist.

Accompanied by loyal daemon-dog Wolf, Anise sets out on a spellbinding and treacherous journey, meeting magical musician Robin and fox god Whin, and facing the cunning Magpie Queen and a deadly poisonous ink monster. In the midst of her battles she learns that it's not just the daemons of the White Wood she must save, but all the daemons of the world.

Heartseer is a charming, whimsical and occasionally confronting story about friendship, responsibility and compassion. Anise lives in the lop-sided but beloved patchwork house, strugging in the wake of her mother’s death, to continue her work as a heartseer – a human who looks into the truth of matters and intercedes between the mundane and the supernatural. Anise’s world is people with vivid, engaging characters both human and daemon – that latter being patrons of places or problems humans encounter. The balance between humans and daemons has always been a delicate balance but with the advent of swift engineering progress, daemons are being forgotten and the wild places are in danger.

Anise has her own problems though. When her guardian seeks a way to get rid of her, Anise is plunged into a heart stopping adventure – racing against the clock to get to her brother in the capital. Of course, a heartseer is never going to have a straightforward journey. Not when there are so many daemons who need help along the way.

Inspired by folklore, strongly reminiscent of the studio Ghibli creations in terms of complex characters you’ll easily come to adore, Heartseer is a must read middle grade fantasy that packs a lot of adventure and heart into a small space. Anise is an ideal heroine – curious, compassionate and brave with just a bit of pig headedness. Her companions – gruff Wolf, fun loving and loquacious Whin, and aspiring musician Robin – make a great team for the quest ahead. This is beautifully written and cleverly plotted. Highly recommend.

And if you are in the market for an audio book, Katherine Press does an amazing job of bringing the story and characters to life.
