About this listen

A Sunday Times '100 best crime novels and thrillers since 1945' pick!

A British cabinet minister is gunned down on a London street by an IRA assassin. In the wake of national outcry, the authorities must find the hitman. But the trail is long cold, the killer gone to ground in Belfast, and they must resort to more unorthodox methods to unearth him. Ill prepared and poorly briefed, undercover agent Harry Brown is sent into the heart of enemy territory to infiltrate the terrorists.

But when it is a race against the clock, mistakes are made and corners cut. For Harry Brown, alone in a city of strangers, where an intruder is the subject of immediate gossip and rumour, one false move is enough to leave him fatally isolated...

Critic reviews

PRAISE FOR GERALD SEYMOUR:
You don't read Gerald Seymour, you commit to it totally. His stories have amazing detail, yet you still fly through them. And your effort is well rewarded
The great strength of Seymour's writing lies in his depiction of the poor bloody infantry of crime and policing
Seymour's finger is always on the current socio-political pulse
Thrilling plots and . . . credible and sympathetic characters
Supreme spy writer
[Charles] Cumming is matched only by Gerald Seymour now when it comes to recounting field operations

Excellent, without doubt this is the s characters and the situations demonstrate the complexity of the troubles. Narrated masterly by John O’Mahony bringing the characters to life vividly.

This book takes you back to a time where life was more simple but so cruel and shocking. It’s a well written book with a story where there is no winner thoroughly enjoyed listening to this.

A journey back in time

A wonderfully written piece of literature. The story never never rages, it's more of a constant burn, a thorn in the side as opposed to a dagger in the heart. The characters are three dimensional and the plot is a thick broth of intrigue. It's has pathos in abundance and certainly deserves it's long held reputation as a classic.

The underbelly of the spy game.

As someone who knows Belfast this excellent book meant i could visualise the various settings but you don’t have to have been there to be gripped by this story of undercover operations in Northern Ireland.
I enjoyed the book immensely and as someone who didn’t see the tv adaptation I came to the book with no preconceptions of how the characters looked, etc.
A great listen. 5 stars all round.
