Editor reviews

Set against the backdrop of WWI, Graham Ison’s fourth Inspector Hardcastle mystery finds the titular detective wading through the murk of two seemingly unrelated murders; those of a low-ranking police officer and the wife of a pilot she claims was killed on the battlefield but who miraculously turns up unscathed and throws a wrench into Hardcastle’s investigation.

David Thorpe adroitly captures the dry British humor of Ison’s prose as well as the indomitable Hardcastle’s brusque rasp and no-nonsense attitude in this compelling police procedural.

Summary

In February 1915, the Great War is still raging on the Western Front, but in Westminster, at the centre of Hardcastle's bailiwick, a policeman is shot dead. At first, Hardcastle believes the murderer to have been a disturbed burglar.

But as enquiries continue, attention focuses on an antiquarian bookseller, a struggling artist, a reporter, officers of the Royal Flying Corps, both in England and in France, and the activities of Isabel Plowman, the wife of one of them and the lover of others.

Good book

Enjoyable book based in the First World War and pilots, accurate description of the class system that prevailed in that period Detective an interesting character, and for a free book very worth listening too

Good, But Not His Best

I have enjoyed all the Hardcastle books. Some are better than others, Don't get me wrong this is a good book, it has some historcal references, which I always enjoy. Hardcastle is as gruff as ever in his indomitable way. The story rattles along okay, but does suffer from some over long sections when i thought, please just get on with the story. It does have a twist of sorts, which fooled me (but I am easily fooled!). So give it a go, but there are much better editions in the canon. Oh, yes it is brilliantly read by David Thorpe as ever...

Good WW1 era crime story

I downloaded this thinking it was WW2 era because of the WW2 aircraft on the front cover so finding it to be WW1 was a surprise. I enjoyed it and will see if there are more in the series

really good police tale

really caught the era you can almost smell the smoke from the cigarettes and the the awful snobbery of the officer class. The reader did a great job of making each character recognizable while keeping the voices clear .

A Decent Enough WhoDunnit

Lacked a certain something but was enjoyable enough. I don't know if I would bother seeking out another in the series.

Very good crime thriller set in London during WW1

I enjoyed this very much. Nice tension between civilians and military and the appalling snobbery of 20 year olds with a pip. I was slightly confused to start because I didn’t reread the blurb when I bought this from my wish list, relying on the cover instead; a cover showing an American plane of at least a generation later 🤦🏼‍♀️

Engaging in many levels

A mystery set against the turmoil and tragedy of WW1.
The superior attitudes of the upper classes were unbelievable.
