About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

What if we could stop cancer in its tracks, prevent cardiovascular disease, lose weight at will and reverse the effects of ageing? With new developments in artificial intelligence, gene editing and robotics, it might all be possible sooner than you think.

In Hacking Humanity, technology journalist Lara Lewington takes us to the cutting edge of scientific research to demystify how new innovations are transforming medicine for the better. Drawing us into the science behind the world’s healthiest people from Silicon Valley to the Blue Zones while experimenting with the new technology already available, she examines the real challenges ahead and how we can overcome them. From new miracle drugs to life-saving robotic assistants and diagnostic tools that help us avoid disease altogether, today’s most exciting innovations are paving the way for tomorrow’s healthcare revolution, extending not only our lifespans but also our healthspans – the amount of time we spend living in good health.

With expert insights and clear explanations, Hacking Humanity reveals how we can harness the power of technology to improve our lives now and transform our healthcare system for a better future, unlocking the power to reshape our genetic destinies and live longer and healthier lives.

Critic reviews

No one explains cutting-edge science and technology more clearly than Lara. (Lorraine Kelly)
This is the bible for living a HEALTHIER life. Longevity is no fun without health …. (Davina McCall)
This book is an extraordinarily helpful map to guide you through an uncertain world. (Damian Hughes, author of 'High Performance')
This brilliantly written book steers the reader through a path that separates the nonsense from the evidence, guiding us through the new and emerging science, and empowering each of us to take ownership of our physical and mental health. (Russell Foster, author of 'Life Time')
Looking to the future but giving us confidence as well - so rare. (Jeremy Vine)
As a doctor, I’m fascinated and sometimes cautious about new technology. What Lara does so beautifully in Hacking Humanity is cut through the hype and show how innovation can be human, hopeful and practical, helping us prevent illness, not just treat it. It’s a book that asks not how long we can live, but how well. Lara Lewington’s Hacking Humanity explores how science and technology might help us care for patients better — not by replacing compassion, but by enhancing it. (Dr Amir Khan)

It’s not a guide to be healthy, it’s a study of current and future tech that will help us live longer healthier lives and the societal and personal impacts that could have.
