About this listen

This sequel to the action-packed Devil Dealing depicts the ongoing search by detectives Jeremy Ryder and Navi Pillay for the evil gangster Skhura Thabethe, dealer in stolen weapons, drugs and murder. The secondary plot shows the detectives uncovering a link between stolen weapons and the local trade in drugs. The two main plots unfold in strictly organized chronological sequence over 10 days, until a climactic ending when the two plot-lines coalesce in a spectacular confrontation between the detectives and the two main villains. Against a background of delicate emotional exchanges between victims of crime and the police, Gun Dealing, like its predecessor, explores the moral and ethical choices made by the detectives in their day-to-day confrontation with rampant and brutal crime in contemporary South Africa.

I wrote when I read this more than two years ago "In a word - brilliant. Page-turning. Brilliant conclusion, bringing us full circle back to the ... but no plot spoilers from me. I'm going to read it again." Now I've listened to the audiobook. It hasn't diminished the experience for me. It's even better. The characters of the crooks are so well realised. I like the slang and the mix of languages. This was well done. I must listen to the other two in the series, too, even though I read them two years ago.

In a word - brillitant

It's more than a year since I read the prequel to this book. Well, not so much a prequel as simply the first in a series of four books. I loved this. It was very different and the villain is just as bad as you can get them. The narrator played the roles well, and the nasty hombre is a match for the hero detective. A clash of titans, this is.

The forensic detail was good, too. I liked the whole thing about the weapons and how to trace them. It was entertaining as well as thrilling. I'll get more of this author.

A long time coming but very exciting

This was thoroughly enjoyable. A police procedural with fascinating characters, drunken thugs speaking accurate slang, and thoroughly entertaining cops who work hard at their craft but are witty and human. I didn't get the fact that the opening scene was deliberately commenting on the lyrical mood of the opening of 'Cry, the Beloved Country', but a friend drew this to my attention. Good writing.

Excellent forensics tracking and sleuth work

If you could sum up Gun Dealing in three words, what would they be?

True to life

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gun Dealing?

The opening is sensational. I love it. Calm, happy, menacing. Then a shattering outbreak of violence. As anyone who knows this country will see, it's unfortunately just like real life. There's also an amazing dinner party where things happen that happen every night all over the country. Better not say what it is. Don't want to spoil it for others. Very exciting, though.

Have you listened to any of Ian Patrick’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No. Not yet. But have read the first book, and loved it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. It's exciting, but good to listen to in the car or later at night, in big bits.

Any additional comments?

Nice voice. Nice speech. Nice sound.

Sensational opening

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Good voice and diction and very pacy thriller with lots of atmosphere created.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Excellent ending. Brings you full circle and is loaded with lyrical beauty after breathtaking action.

Have you listened to any of Ian Patrick’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No. Has he done others? He certainly should. This was good quality.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Oh yes. Definitely. There's an old couple - in fact three old people - who visit the captain to make a donation to support the police. So beautiful. Then there's a funeral scene which is so touching. The lyricism of the writing in both these scenes - balanced by realism and lovely touches of humor - is outstanding.

Any additional comments?

I read that other people think the narrator should include more than one male voice - have actresses to play the female voices. I think that's right, although it didn't strike me at the time. Another thing: this is really good sound quality, too. I thought that the story itself was really interesting, but that it meandered a little in the scene where they were tracking the telephones. Then it came together again in an exciting clash in the final chapter.

Very good and different from the norm
