Editor reviews

2013 Audies finalist David Aaron Baker's understated performance gets to the emotional core of Travis Tracy, a teen reeling from the effects of a car accident that has seriously injured his mother. Baker voices Travis' vulnerability and hopefulness with a sympathetic touch as Travis is kicked out of his house after an argument with his grieving father. With only his great-great-great grandfather's guitar and a few dollars, Travis decides to find a local guitar maker who can repair his guitar and maybe even give him work. Listeners will find themselves absorbed as Travis makes his way through the Adirondack Mountains, and the musical element of this audiobook is enhanced with snippets of guitar music and folk songs.

Summary

Travis’s Tacey’s mother has had an accident, a bad one, and the family is falling apart. His father, lost in a haze of grief, has focused his anger and guilt on his oldest son. Which is why, at age 14, Travis finds himself out of a home and on the road in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.

With no more than a few dollars, a change of clothes, and his great-great-great grandfather’s guitar, Travis wonders how he is going to survive. But the world is not always cruel, as Travis discovers when he is befriended by guitar-maker Scott McKissack and realizes that with luck, and music, he might even be able to reunite his shattered family.

Richly populated with vivid and endearing characters, resonating with a love of music, this recording of MJ Auch’s novel will speak (and sing) directly to the hearts of listeners of all ages.

Don?t give up hope for someone you love

A heartwarming story dealing with 14 year old Travis and his response to his family's failure to cope with his mothers accident, that has left his mother with a traumatic brain injury, unable to speak, unrecogniseable as their mother.

Kicked out of his home by his father, and armed with little else but his mothers old guitar, he makes a journey for the first time living away from his family. Can he learn to survive on his own? More importantly, can he find the strength to believe that his mother will get well again, when it seems the rest of his family have given up on her?

He discovers that his love for guitar music, instilled in him by his mother, might be the key to his own survival and the answer to how he can help his mother to recover.

This book shows how important it is to beat the despair that can sometimes be sprung upon us by unforseen circumstances. We can be encouraged that as one door closes we might be able to influence another one to open.
