"Good-Bye to All That: An Autobiography" by Robert Graves is a seminal work that vividly captures the harrowing experiences of a young British officer during World War I.

Published in 1929, the book provides a candid and unflinching portrayal of life in the trenches, exploring the brutality and absurdity of war. Graves recounts his childhood, education, and early literary career, interweaving personal anecdotes with his wartime experiences. The autobiography delves into his friendships with notable figures like Siegfried Sassoon and critiques the societal norms of early 20th-century Britain. The title reflects Graves' profound disillusionment with the pre-war world and the irrevocable changes brought by the conflict.

With its clarity, wit, and honesty, "Good-Bye to All That" remains an essential work in the canon of war literature, offering insights into the personal and collective trauma of a generation.

Would prefer an Englishman reading.A total slaughter of the English language! A fine self-study of a Great author and poet.

Bad pronunciation.

Whilst undoubtedly a classic, this audiobook was, unfortunately ruined by the narration. If Joel Shrink ever reads this review, please don’t take this personally but the publishers really should have had someone with an English accent reading this.

Oh dear!

Another fantastic story ruined by an American who as usual, has no clue about English pronunciations, accents, or military terms. A famous British memoir of the war, why would it be read by an American? Why?

All time classic Great War memoir

Brilliant book DESTROYED by the use of an American narrator. A disgraceful decision and an absolute travesty.

Why???

No, Huckleberry Finn did not sound like King Charles because it is a quintessentially an American novel, and a wonderful one too.

So why do we have an American narrator for a quintessentially British novel? Good-Bye to All, by Robert Graves is about his life in the Army in WW1. It is the most British novel you can have. He grew up in the English public school system and hearing an American narrator trying to navigate the public school slang and traditions simply doesn’t work. It jars at every turn.

He then went into the British Army as a 2nd lieutenant (pronounced Leff-tennant non Loo-tennent) in a Welsh regiment with Welsh accents all over the place. On it went.....

I tried to get past all this for an hour or two hoping the story will win out in the end but is simply didn’t.

Pity!
