About this listen

During one glorious summer between the wars, the realities of life and the sexual ritual dance of the adult world creep into the life of young Margaret Marsh. Her father, preaching the doctrine of the unsavoury Primal Saints; her mother, bitterly nostalgic for what might have been; Charles and Binkie, anchored in the past and a game of words; dying Mrs Frayling and Lydia the maid, given to the vulgar enjoyment of life - all contribute to Margaret's shattering moment of truth. And when the storm breaks, it is not only God who is on the rocks as the summer hurtles towards drama, tragedy and a touch of farce.

Would you listen to God on the Rocks again? Why?

Yes, I liked the quality of the writing. It's much more than just a story.

What other book might you compare God on the Rocks to, and why?

It's unique and original in lots of ways. The only other book I could compare it to is Oranges are not the only fruit, which is partly biographical, God on the Rocks is entirely fiction.

Have you listened to any of Maggie Ollerenshaw’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have and was pleased to find she was the reader here. This is beautifully read.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There is an excellent film which I have seen, but has sadly never been re-shown. A tag line would be something like 'Love, tragedy and a child's awakening'

Any additional comments?

This book is special to me for another reason, the child in the story and I share the same name.

I loved it
