Summary

Heroes don't stand for themselves. They stand for others who cannot.

Betrayed by those they'd taken in and narrowly avoiding a disaster of untold proportions, Lyrian and his friends are once again thrust into a fight for their very survival, this time against Carver and his band of murderous adventurers. But as their newfound war quickly reaches a stalemate, both sides find themselves scrambling for a way to break it, while viciously battling one another for every inch of ground that they can steal in the process.

Yet just as Lyrian and the others manage to gain an advantage that could very well end the conflict, they find their world turned upside down as an even greater enemy appears on the horizon. Pushed to the brink, it will take every ounce of cunning and courage they have to find a way to survive.

Assuming they can at all.

Gold standard

These are some of the most fun and satisfying litrpg stories out there, each book is a fulfilling enjoyable story in it's own right whilst still running a bigger narrative through them. Will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Also thoroughly enjoy the narration.

I love this series

I think it is great how the author is able to keep up with his good work.
There are two things that are really well made, the gaming mechanics and group battles..

It is extremely hard to find a good book with game mechanics because the authors often get lost with all the abilities he creates an "forget" them BUT not here, same goes for group battles and even wars... It is amazing that he even puts friendly fire in place.

I'm extremely happy with this series so far, please keep the great work.

I really enjoy listening to this story the only slightly annoying thing I would say is the amount of times the author writes “wasting no time”!

3.5 stars... it needed less everything

The book was too long and not in a good way. I don't know what games you all play but my fights even vs bosses don't last hours and I certainly don't want to hear a play by play of multi hour fights.

Then there is a lot of talking about stuff about what everybody else is doing. It almost always starts as, "So then I needed to go talk to this group and find out what happened with them" You then get a bunch of really long stories of what happened with lots of classic anime side character comments to make you understand, like "Wow that must have been difficult" or "totally cool your so smart!" or " Wow what an accomplishment." And these descriptions can be really long or if not you get like 5 peoples stories all in a row.

My last gripe is that this game isn't fun. It's a really bad job that your paying to do. Let us say you were on that waiting list and just got into the "game" you are lvl 1 and your starting city is in 5 way political turmoil secret civil war and there are no starting areas for you to grind anymore like "go kill 5 snakes" because guilds took over them. You cannot go out and gather materials because the Guilds of everybody in the game before you have taken all the good spots for gathering in order to make money. So you are now forced to join a clan to just play because your faction doesn't care what happens outside of the city walls. No good large clans are taking new players and any other clan that will take you will use you like slave labor and treat you like crap, or you do join a guild with good people but it is small and gets pushed around by larger clans who number in the thousands. You could try and travel to the two other human places but one of them is being attacked on a daily basis by level 27+ players and orcs and you would have to join the town and get worked like a slave and only get 5 hours of sleep (not joking 5 hours of sleep rotations for the town) or you can go to the other, Coldscar, and then be caught up in a guild war between the largest guilds also doing the same thing and then be a slave player to them. OR MAYBE you actually GET ENSLAVED!!! I really want to play this game now!!!!! No actually I don't. If I don't want to play it because it sounds like not fun I certainly don't want to read about it.

It does get better after the first 20 hours (so the last 10 hours of the book). The MC finally does stuff, and the actual game comes back like leveling and skills and building new things. But it took way to long for that to happen. The book then ruins the end with a not-epic battle that lasts WAY WAY to long, I had to fast forwarded through most of it (over an hour of this stupid long fight) and just listened to the key points.

You know a book is good when you can't put it down, you know a book has too much stuff when you have to take breaks from it because your attention is wandering. This book has wandered away from a "fun, cool, new game where there are some problems", into a "not fun job where you are sleep deprived, have to work 19 hours a day (literally), and can't do what you want to do because everybody is going to mess with your stuff and there isn't anything you can do about it." You also have to hear the characters say over and over how "cool" that is.... it is so not cool though. If this was the first book in the series and as a reader you didn't have the nostalgia of the other books I don't think I would have even finished it. So 3.5 Stars For me on this one. It just wasn't fun to read.

Weak Audiobook

I really liked the previous three books, so I was quite disappointed to read book four. At least 50% of this book was pointless dull filler that any good editor should have struck down well before publishing. This book was so bad that I won’t be giving book 5 a chance.

Review

Overall the Narya at the performance was great Luke Daniels delivers as usual. Overall the story was OK🤷‍♂️..my biggest issue with this audiobook is that the story was too long. Which is ironic because there was very little progression in the actual storyline. Unfortunately it took almost 2 year for audiobook 4 to come out, by then there has been a flood of Litrpg on the market. And at a much higher quality. This one for me was just a let down. Maybe I’ve been spoiled with the other litrpg that are on the market.

love this series.

This story stays in line with what we have come to expect with just as much action and progression as we have come to expect! I'm a fan of the writing and the narration!

Not Worth Your Money

This series has an interesting premise and some interesting situations that arise. I did read and enjoy the first three installations in this series. However, this book went horribly, horribly wrong. Not only does it seem as if the manuscript had no editor, but the editing in the audio version is not great either. There are bloopers at the end, but in several spots there were multiple takes accidentally left in the middle of the book. It really pulls you out of the story if you manage to get into the story in the first place with all the filler text, extremely odd word choices, dialogue that does not follow, and awkward grammar.

In a couple of cases the main character, Lirian? (unsure on spelling), was aware of a minor plot point but then proceeds to forget about that and relearn it a few scenes later. This probably happened because the author went back to change how he learned about it to make, what he saw as, a better scene. Instead, confusion ensues for the reader. A major editing mistake.

In several cases there was dialogue written as follows:
“I suppose”, she supposed.
“I assume”, he assumed.
“Do you three at least have an idea of why these strange magical events are happening at least?”
It was so bad I was uncertain at first if it was intentional or not.

The voices used for all the characters are often infuriating. They are often not so much different voices so much as different accents for no reason that I can find. This person might be Swedish and this one Estonian. This man is Jamaican. It is all very haphazard without any clear reason as to why. There is a character that talks extremely s l o w l y and another that talks much like a pothead. One voice and character I thoroughly enjoyed was the cook Ragnar? (unsure on spelling)

The exposition is extremely long winded, and many sentences and descriptions are not additive in that they don’t add color to the world and don’t improve the plot in any way. I’m not sure if this reads better as a paper book and it’s a quark of being an audiobook, but either way this is a review for the audio book and it was hard to stay interested.

Whoever edited this book did not do the best they could or were woefully incompetent. I am honestly not sure this book was edited by an editor at all. I am not sure how this got published in such a state.

I finished this book solely so that I could give it a full and fair review.

Do not get this book.

A boring slog

It felt like the author was getting paid by the word. This book was so bad that I was embarrassed to listen to it. The LitRPG genre isn't know for great writing but this was a huge dropoff from previous entries.

Boring, formulaic crap

Literally the previous book but again. Same villain, same wibbly-wobbly dark energy with a different name, same boring fights with generic characters. Author loves extensively describing swordplay with no interest in variety of combat or location. As uncreative as it gets. Author frequently writes himself into a corner then deus-ex-machinas it. I only buy these because they're long and I just need something during workouts, if you're looking to enjoy the listen stay far, far away.

performance was good story lacking 😪

Sorry but the story lacks substance. I also don't really enjoy the fourth wall breaking in the chapter where he is clearly talking about fans that were annoyed with previous books. I'm only five al.ost six hours into it and I think I will b setting this one to the side and chalking it up to a loss
