About this listen
He thought he knew everything about his husband's murder. He was wrong.
Detective Josiah Raine witnessed his husband's brutal murder seven years ago. He was there that blood-soaked night, and he knows what happened. The murderer is long-since dead. The case closed.
But now, Josiah is about to discover a devastating revelation that will drag him back into the darkness he's fought so desperately to escape. Will it shatter his life, or help him build a new one?
Dark water. Deadly secrets. Dangerous love.
London, 2095. Sixty years after rising seas drowned the old world, a corrupt system of servitude keeps the new one afloat. Alexander Lytton is now a pawn in his captor's hands. Stripped of his freedom and forced into a life of prostitution in Ghost Eye City, he clings to the memory of who he once was.
Meanwhile, Josiah's dogged pursuit of justice forces him to confront the truth about his husband's murder—and his own buried grief. What he uncovers shatters everything he thought he knew.
In a searing climax, the consequences of two nights of violence, years ago, finally collide—and nothing will ever be the same again.
Dive into Ghost Eye, the exciting second novel in the four-part MM murder mystery romance series, Dark Water. Mature content suitable for adults only.
©2025 Xanthe Walter (P)2025 Xanthe WalterReally, though, these are minor quibbles. The author puts you through the emotional wringer, and while some mysteries are solved, there are plenty remaining. Some appear obvious, but Dark Water as the series title is ever so appropriate. All sorts of things are out there, hiding in the shadows, ready to catch the unwary and undefended.
Matt Addis gives a great performance.
Dark waters indeed

Anyway the plot and the action move quickly and dramatically in this second book of the series. Shocking secrets are revealed, as we learn more about what happened to both Alex and Josiah in the past before Elliot’s murder. I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to spoil it. But it’s quite an emotion journey for the Alex and Josiah, and for us reader too.
Please READ the trigger warnings as the story definitely lives up to its non-consensual warnings!! However there are lots of tender moments and lovely hotness too. Spicy rating 5/5
I can’t wait for the third instalment!
Xanthe keeps you on your toes with twists and turns

As in the previous book, we move back and forth in time, opening in the past as Alex Lytton
has just discovered the extent to which he’s been manipulated and cruelly betrayed by his father’s rival and realising he’s facing a future in which the only certainties are servitude and degradation. In the present timeline, detective Josiah Raine continues his investigation into the murder of Alex’s former owner, and an uneasy trust – and something more – as the low-key attraction sparking between them from the beginning starts to develop into something filled with tension and longing and a slow-burning intensity that is really compelling.
This story goes to some pretty dark places as Alex’s story unfolds and we learn what happens to him in his first months of servitude. It’s not pretty; his new owner, George Tyler ,is bitter, cruel, vindictive and out for revenge, and the author doesn’t sugar-coat any aspect of Alex’s life at this point. (There are some disturbing scenes in the story so please heed the warnings given in the advisory section at the beginning using the “Look Inside” feature.)
In the present-day timeline, Josiah is becoming more and more certain that Alex knows something that is key to the murder investigation, but that he’s holding it back for reasons that Josiah can’t yet fathom. In this book, we find out why; Alex has been waiting until he can be sure he can completely trust Josiah with some devastating and damaging truths, and that he is indeed the man Alex hoped he would be, one with the skill, intelligence and ruthless determination to pursue the truth and to get justice for someone Alex cared about, no matter the risk to his own life and reputation.
The plot, is, once again, utterly compelling, and the world-building is superb. A lot of time is devoted to Alex’s growth in this story, and we witness his progression from the lonely, lost and immature young man who did some seriously stupid and hurtful things to one who has to forget his past life and dig very deep to find the wherewithal to withstand everything being thrown at him in his new one. Facing life as a servant who is totally subject to his owner’s cruelties and depravity, regardless of what the law says – makes him grow up pretty fast as he looks back and admits how gullible and selfish he’d been, and how wilfully blind he’d been to the world around him.
Josiah’s journey is just as impactful, as we further unravel the mystery of his husband’s death and get a closer look at the intensity of the grief and guilt Josiah has been carrying for the past seven years. It’s been with him every day – but for some reason, Alex’s arrival into his life has brought everything closer to the surface, and Josiah doesn’t know why.
Matt Addis delivers another barnstorming performance that absolutely does justice to this intense, enthalling story. His pacing is good, his enunciation is clear and the emotional content of the story is superbly realised, from the tiniest hints of humour to the big, sweeping moments of realisation, sorrow or anguish. MA expertly characterises and differentates between a large-ish secondary cast using a variety of tone and accent, and he absolutely nails the characterisations of the main protagonists. From the way he voices Josiah, it’s easy to visualise the character as a big man who exudes confidence and authority while hiding a deeply-seated vulnerabilty beneath his armoured exterior; the portrayal of Alex clearly shows how tough and resilient he is, even in the midst of the awful things that are happening to him; and MA does a great job of capturing the different facets of Tyler’s personality – he’s far from a one-note villain on the page, and that’s also true of him in the audio.
This series is shaping up to be one of my favourites of 2025. Now on to book three!
Utterly compelling - nail-bitingly good!!

I loved the development of Josiah and Alex’s relationship, we learn more about their pasts and more about Peter’s death.
Shocking secrets are revealed and there are twists to the plot that were unexpected.
The murder of Elliot Dacre takes more of a back seat in this book, but we find out why Alex has been holding out on giving much information to Josiah about his late houder and it is a revelation.
I cannot wait for book 3, The Lost Zone, to be available on audio.
The narrator Matt Addis is new to me and has done and excellent job of differentiating between all the different characters and emotions they portray.
I look forward to listening to further audiobooks from him in the future.
Totally Addictive!
