I’m always on the lookout for the latest advice on submitting my work to literary agents. Sadly, I feel cheated to have bought this title only to discover that it is aimed almost exclusively at non-fiction writers. Including the occasional token mention of fiction does not make up for omitting to mention the clear and obvious bias towards non-fiction somewhere in the description. I listened anyway, because, well, I paid for it, and I’ll take all the advice I can get, but far too little was of genuine use to me. I hate to give non-positive reviews but whoever wrote the book description did the author and me a disservice by not making it clear. I went back to check: nowhere does the phrase ‘non-fiction’ appear. I cannot give it an appropriate star rating, even, because it is not what I thought I was buying. I took whatever I could from the book, but the vast majority of it was simply not relevant to my own work. For the non-fiction writer, I can tell there is plenty of invaluable advice, to be fair, but I feel ever so slightly robbed. I will probably delete this review eventually because being negative feels wrong, but I felt strongly enough that I needed to say something. It is ‘fiction adjacent’ advice at best, but even that is being generous; most writers know that submitting fiction and non-fiction have distinctly different requirements.

The non-fiction bias.
