About this listen

His dying wish was to set her free. So why does she feel so trapped?

Jack had two dying wishes: that his wife scatter his ashes somewhere "exotic", and that she not give up on life once he was gone. He intended to spur her on to new adventures, but despite clinging to her red suitcase, Geraldine Verne hasn’t left the house for three months.

It takes an accident for Geri to accept help from her friends, but when Meals on Wheels arrive she is mortified. Yet heartbroken volunteer Lottie brings with her more than cottage pie and custard. Like Geri, she too is struggling to cut loose.

As a gloriously unlikely friendship blossoms, Geraldine begins to feel a long-lost spark of life and a newfound confidence. Perhaps what both women needed most, after all, was each other.

A wonderful, gentle story following a widow's journey from the depth of her grief to living in a way she would have never thought possible.

Gentle and moving.

A book about grief being the price you pay for love. Letting go of the past. Having fun doing things and the importance of friendship.

A Really Sweet Story

I thought the narrator did a good job in making the main Character Geraldine come to life, but it annoyed me when there was no change in her voice for the other characters. Many times I had to replay a scene over to figure out which character was talking.

Nice

I loved this book. A brilliant and comic story of love, friendship and coming to terms with grief and moving forwards. This would make an amazing film.

The narrator was brilliant and became Gerri Verne for me.

I read Jane Riley's last book and found that brilliant. Can't wait to read her next!

An unusual love story
