About this listen

Geography Is Destiny tells the history of Britain and its changing relationships with Europe and the wider world, from its physical separation at the end of the Ice Age to the first flickers of a United Kingdom, struggles for the Atlantic and rise of the Pacific Rim.

Applying the latest archaeological evidence, Ian Morris explores how geography, migration, government and new technologies interacted to produce regional inequalities that still affect us today. He charts Britain's geopolitical fortunes over thousands of years, revealing its transformation from a European satellite into a state at the centre of global power, commerce and culture. But as power and wealth shift from West to East, does Britain's future lie with Europe or the wider world?

After listening to his discussion of the relative merits of British and American Christmas movies, I've concluded the author and his publisher should be prosecuted under the terms of the Trade Descriptions Act for pretending this book is primarily about geography. Still, the thematic focus on identity, sovereignty, security, prosperity and mobility works well, though I wonder whether the many Brexit-related refrains will soon make it seem a bit dated (full marks for the "Boer exit" pun though). Overall this is an entertaining if rambling general history with many amusing asides but doesn't contain anything as truly original as his seminal Why the West Rules—For Now.

Really enjoyed the book - gave me a deeper understanding of this country - easy to listen to and I really liked the narrator. Not sure if it actually matched the title

Excellent sweeping history

It is not about Brexit and geography is not destiny, but other than that it is a good book.

Good book, silly title
